Team play in Raleigh?

Count me in for the 26th of October's Cache-Fest!

I think there should also be some additional rules to keep people (like me) from driving to the "opponents" town the night before. Otherwise, people (like me) might get lucky enough to find them all within the first hour. What fun would that be....? If it is allowed, people (like me) will do it.

I have enjoyed reading all of the brags 'n digs, and especially liked the poetic flavor in some of them.

For those interested, there is an event cache at the Peaks of Otter on the Blue Ridge Parkway on October 12.. as part of the October Cache-Fest icon_smile.gif

Hows This for an idea?

I drew a line from Raleih to Asheville and a line from Winston Salem to Charlotte on a map. It intersected around salsbury/Kanapolis.

What if we all meet in Salisbury at 7AM (Gives everyone sufficiant driving time) then we sit down with a map and put an x 10 miles east of Salisbury on the map and tell Asheville they have till noon to hide 5 micro and 1 main cache and then meet back at that location at Noon. Same Thing for Raleigh But 10 miles west of Salisbury. and so on for other teams. Once back at the meeting location we swap co-ordinats for each others cache. Have lunch. Lets Say 1PM everyone takes off to find each others Cache. To keep things fair lets have one extra team member who will go with another team (Example 1 from asheville goes with raleigh on their quest That way he can provide clues (for a penalty of course)

and verify the time that the final cache is found.

The Winner will be the one who find the final cache first. and then we eat Pizza drink beer and tell lies?????????????????

I know a few in Charlotte have expressed interest in playing the state hunt. You guys speak up if interested. As for Raleigh, I think we have a substantial crew ready to hide, hunt, and conquer. See you at the finish line.

gojoey, You forgot about Roanoke/Lynchburg. I purpose that each team be in the city that they are going to hunt...say by 9am. Then the leaders will call each other and swap coordinates.

Also each team be given a staging point that is within 2 miles of the hunt area.

I like the idea of having a team member with the opposing team during the hunt. Also at the given time they can give the opponet the coordinates to the caches. Lets work on that.

The opposing teams can meet half way back to their respective cities to brag and tell lies.

Also If we met in a central location we would have a chance to meet each oter from all of the different cities at once plus the hunt would not be one city against each other at a time but all competing at the same time in an unfamiliar location which would put our different hiding abilities to the test. I am not hung on this idea but it is just a suggestion and I will bend

to the will of the Group

What about the famous Triffid, Cache Hunter 1, and a host of other VA cachers who really want to participate. Martinsville and/or Danville are border towns that aren't a huge distance from Raleigh, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Madison, Salisbury, High-Point, and yes, even out in them thar hills in western parts of both VA & NC.

If you want to limit it to just NC's, well, hey, my Mom lives in NC... can I come [;)] and join the El Diablo Evil Horde team .....[huggy hears the laughter all the way up in Lynchburg]

Let's get it moving, but let's get more inclusive and make it more than one weekend so we can have "semi-final", and then "final" competitions among the winners of the semi-finals.

My $0.02 worth.

I like the original idea..but up to the group. Once again your forgetting Virginia. That would be a long drive for them. I also can't see Salisbury having enough room to do this in.

Not only was the idea to get everyone together but to also visit each others turf. The champion won't be determined in one weekend. I can't see going into a new area and placing caches in a matter of hours and still challenge the teams. Not to the extent that I envision anyways. This should be a unique and well thought out hunt.

My thoughts were that when we got down to the final 2 cites in the play offs we could all meet in a central location to celebrate.

Once again keep Virginia in mind. As far as I'm concerned they are a big part of this. They have some of the greatest cachers I know and I don't want to exclude them. If team Greensboro wins this I want to know that we knocked off the greats like Triffid, Huggy_d1 and Cache hunter just to name a few, and there are many more up there.

I see me and one of my high ranking member of the horde (Huggy_d1) was posting at the same time.

Just a word of warning to the rest of you...You don't want me to put together the original horde..Triffid, Hawk eye, Huggy_d1, Cache hunter_1 and Mizzbfly, even though we would be missing Joeybob and JeffersonStone...you guys wouldn't stand a chance!

So my advice is to keep us as divided as possible.

I will go to Asheville if that's what it takes. But first, let me check with the rest of the Raleigh pack. Back to the city vs. city idea. I like it. As for a date to start. October 26th. Each city hides 5 caches, all leading to a final cache. The city that gets to the final cache first, wins. Let there be a code word in the final cache, just to validate the find. Teams be in the city they are going to hunt, at 9am. Pick a meeting spot after the hunt, and trade stories. For example, Raleigh vs. Asheville---> meet up in Greensboro for dinner. Sounds simple, but not really. So, one question....who's buying the beer? icon_biggrin.gif OR PEOPLE FROM ALL CITIES PARTICIPATING, MEET UP FIRST IN GREENSBORO ONE DAY TO PLAN THE HUNT. I DON'T THINK THERE IS REALLY A TIME RESTRAINT ON THIS THING. MEETING TOGETHER FIRST MAY INCREASE THE CHANCE OF THIS STATE WIDE (AND PARTS OF VA.) CACHE HUNT GOING A LOT SMOOTHER. P.S. The original horde would definitely mix things up. We'll save that one for a state vs. state competition. (I can hear El Diablo's brain stirring now.) icon_wink.gif

You guys really took this thing and ran with it! I may not be able to play on the 26th due to family obligations, but might be able to participate on other subsequent dates. You know, El Diablo, I kind of like the idea of the Evil Horde taking on all comers. JeffersonStone could be brought back to the Dark Side pretty easily..... icon_eek.gif

In all seriousness It's kinda' hard to compare anyones caching ability when some you have don't give coordinates or one of our's is in a dense hemlock forest where even the militarys unit's wouldn't get reception & we give no hint's. We're all comparing apples to oranges here. It's gonna' be tough finding equal turf & distance for us all but I'll try to make whatever distance is required. Lookin' forward to meeting some fellow cachers.....and beating "The Horde" will be quite satisfying also! icon_wink.gif

Deadite,

I Think you are taking this the wrong way. I sincerly believe all the "Trash Talk" here is said in good humor.

I don't believe anyone here is trashing anyone. I've met a lot of Geocachers over the past year or so, and they are all good people.

Please don't take good humor and hype as trash talk. If I'm wrong on this and anyone out there is offended...speak up.

El Diablo is right this is all a lot of fun and people are just posturing. In preperation for such a big event there has to be a lot of hype and sometimes it sounds personall but it isnt. Just wait until after the hunt when we have a beer together (MILK FOR WUZZYS FROM RALEIGH) icon_razz.gif Everything will be forgotten.

Hmmmmmm did I see a cacher at the Army surpless store look at a net that you can hang in a tree and when you pick up a fake icon_eek.gif rock this net drops..Naaa nobody would be that mean :: OR WOULD THEY?????

Ok, if meeting together in person to plan this thing is not an option for all cities, then how about a internet chat? If nothing else, we could atleast slam each other in real time. icon_biggrin.gif

I looked thru all previous threads and couldnt find where anyone said they couldnt make a meeting??? In fact I couldnt find any referenc to any planning meeting..?? icon_confused.gif Am I missing something Here????

I have met quite a few of these folks in person, searched for their caches, or had nice conversations with them. I really think the worst thing they would do to anyone is tease them about how slow they are at finding the clues, or how the food is getting cold, etc. These people are way above average, and are just having a little fun with all these posts. No one means any harm to anyone, just a bit of posturing prior to the game.

Go back and look at the posts from the Help needed in Raleigh thread started by El Diablo. We were only about 30 minutes late getting fed, thanks to the weather gods smiling on us! Cache Hunter 1 and I are back to normal already, no lasting ill effects. Well, the irrational fear of bamboo not withstanding.

I was thinking...how about a Halloween meet. A party held at my house. Dress as your user name if possible....the Horde will be the Horde. I'm thinking on Saturday the 19th of OCT. We can go over the rules of the hunt.

What You think?

Hmm, El Diablo, why would we want to create cache's for a team hunt that were unfindable? We're talking about 5 microcaches to start with. It's dang easy to hide them in what can be difficult places to start with-- just ask 4Finders and Cache Hunter 1. What's the point? We'd all hide them impossibly, and nobody would find all 5. WE ALL LOSE then.

The whole point is to make them challenging. Yeah, I know, a real fake rock is as close as it gets to impossible. Let's think outside of the box and just stretch the boundaries, not make them in another universe.

Will have to let you know later about the get together. Not sure how an evil horde member by the name of huggy-dee-one would dress, but no matter how hard you try, it just comes out nice [;)]

We've about decided to just let all the other so called teams hash it out, pick a "winner" & then we won't have to make so many trips out of town, you know with the process of elimination & all.

Given the price of alcohol, tobacco & firearms our traveling budget is amite limited.

'Course I'm bettin' we'll still have to drive all the way to Roanoke! icon_wink.gif

I'm fairly new to geocaching, but having a blast! Unfortunately, I will be on my honeymoon during this team event, so I'll have to miss it. I do have a suggestion, though. I've read all the ideas in this thread and think the idea of meeting in a central location is great, as well as the idea of having someone from each team along. The only thing about this is that the teams will be hiding caches in unfamiliar locations, and the best caches seem to be placed where the creator knows the terrain. Also, being familiar with the terrain ensures that you don't wander into any forbidden areas or somewhere else that wouldn't welcome a crowd of geocachers.

So, maybe one city could host the event, and do one in each city? Have the team from that city hide all the caches, and then the competing teams could draw their cache at random. The host team would not compete, but a member would accompany each competing team to provide hints and verify the finds. This way the caches would be hidden by people familiar with the area, would be roughly equal in difficulty, and would be fairly consistent.

Of course, this would test your finding ability only, but maybe you could work out a way to rate the host city on it's hiding - a score from the competing teams? Then each team would play host once during the tournament for their city and be rated for hiding, and compete in each other city for the prize in finding.

Just a few thoughts - you people are way ahead of me on this but I hope to catch up soon.

icon_frown.gifIt looks like including the mountain tribe in a statewide geocaching event may be on hold till at least the spring of 03. icon_cool.gifI like RaoulDukes ideas for a combined event along with those of Eldiablo it should be a fantastic event when it gets off the ground. (I will stay in touch with Eldiablo by email on any developments that we make up here.) Well for now I have to go and do the first shift in the graveyard shift (See link below)

I think this idea is probably the most manageable of those suggested. It may take over 6 months to complete if we have teams from several areas, but that may turn out to be the most fun aspect to this. An annual championship after a long season of competition.

If we could set dates early on, everyone could mark it on their calendars and try to save the dates. I think most areas (Triad, Triangle, Asheville, VA, SC, etc.) could field a team even if some people couldn't make a particular event.

I'd be very interested to hear from some others around the state, VA and SC. Spring is here and we're wasting time!

This idea has so many possibilities. I think the thing that bogged us down the first time around was trying to figure out which idea to use.

If we can get participants in several cities I woud love to do this, or if there is only one city interested...I would still love to do it.

Keep in mind, a lot of planning will have to go into it. So if your ready to have some fun let me know and we'll work out the details.

I'm not afraid of planning. Too bad this didn't come up 2 weeks ago. We just had a Triangle Area meeting with over 50 people attending. I've posted it to our local group's Yahoo group.

I'm also a member of the Triad Yahoo group, but it might be better if you posted something there to get some widespread interest going over there.

If you know anyone in the Charlotte area or Asheville, see if they're up for it too.

EDIT: I sent an email to adventuretom in the Charlotte area to see if there was any interest there.
