Subtracting GPS coordinates

Hello, I am attempting my fist multi location cache and the second step requires me to subtract a number from a set of coordinates. 
“Subtract the grand total of the letters from the coords of: N 44 40.143 W 084 39.905 (both N and W coords. Ignore the decimal points.) to find the final cache.”

The number we got was 91, but I’m not sure how to subtract that at all. Any help is appreciated!

Note that I've changed the numbers in your example to avoid spoiling the multi-cache.

The multi-caches I've done have all just added or subtracted from the least significant digits, like this:

N 45 45.456 W 084 34.345
       -123         -123
N 45 45.333 W 084 34.222

Also take care that sometimes you'll have to add/substract more than just the decimal numbers.

 

N 45 45.456 W 084 34.345

             - 500                 - 400 

N 45 44.956 W 084 33.945

In short, there's no standard for this.  You've got to follow the CO's instructions carefully, or read their mind.  It might be simplest to just experiment until you get coords that look reasonable.
