How to easily get coordinates to your device

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Have you ever had the problem that you got a long list with coordinates from a fellow Geocacher and then had to type them all one by one into your GPS/mobile device? Maybe when you solved mysteries together? The GPX-Builder makes this very easy by creating a GPX file from the coordinates.  You can then import this GPX file into your GPS device or app and start geocaching immediately!

That has never happened to me. I have never gotten a list of coordinates from someone.

We use GSAK and/or the ability to move coordinates directly between our Garmin units over their RF link (even using our old Oregon 450s) when we get into that kind of situation, but I can imagine this being an even more useful tool if it were able to build POI files in the two more common formats (Garmin and TomTom) where lists of POIs with coordinates are sometimes found and need to be 'translated'.

That said, GSAK (and other tools) could convert your *.gpx file of POIs to the necessary format as well.

So I see this more as a potentially useful tool for text style POI translation rather than caches.

We'd sometimes get a list of coordinates from an event organizer, when they also placed new caches in the area.   :)

 - But never saw loading caches manually as a "problem", and still load caches that way today.

How do I do this in the free Geocaching app?  I haven't found a way to import a gpx file to it.

Sounds about right. Groundspeak's free Geocaching app is pretty limited.
