+coachstahly
The help center doesn't appear to mention that you can play a Wherigo on an older Garmin Colorado or an older Garmin Oregon. That being said, smart phones are the easiest way to go. Quote Link to comment

The game cartridge is downloaded onto your phone or GPS device and then opened and played. Most of the cartridges require you to go to the posted coordinates to play the cartridge but there are some that can be played anywhere and will reveal the final location upon completion of the cartridge. You'd need to visit the final location in order to log it as found, just like any other geocache. There are quite a few things that can be done within the cartridge to provide the player with different experiences. The simplest is just a quick walking tour of an area that highlights something of note (or sometimes nothing of note). My very first Wherigo that I created was a walking "tour" on a college campus but themed around Rivendell, from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books. It's similar in nature to a multi-cache in that you go from zone to zone (set of coordinates to another set of coordinates) before finally getting to the final location. Many of the newer Wherigos will have you answer a question once you arrive at the zone, to prove you were there, and then the next zone is revealed once you provide the correct answer. Some Wherigos have a time limit that require you to finish something within a designated period of time or you will have to start the Wherigo over. Some can require you to "pick up" (virtually, within the program) some items and then use them later in the Wherigo to "solve" a problem. Pick up the wrong thing and you get to start over or you have to go back and pick up the right thing. As you can see, there are quite a few variations of what a Wherigo can be (and these are just a few examples), but at its core, it's a created "program/cartridge" that you need to download to your phone or GPS, and then play through to get to the end and the final cache.
