International Geocaching Day 2019

Recommended Posts

So what did you all get up to for International Geocaching Day?

A group of us kiwis decided a good way to celebrate it this year would be to fly to Chicago (a 15 hour flight that had us land here 2 hours before we left New Zealand) and then go and find Beverly (3rd oldest active cache in the world) to get our souvenir.  Thought that would be fitting :)

If you see the error in your souvenirs, can you please provide a link or screenshot so we can look into the text error and make the fix.

The text is now worded correctly. I checked two apps and the web site and it's all good now.  Thanks for taking care of it so quickly!

Dang.

I just finally remembered to find a simple cache not far from home.   Glad I stopped, I saw a really large flock of Sandhill Cranes working the baseball field in the park.

I didn't realize until i logged it  that today is  International Geocaching day.

Found three caches, placed 12 to 15 caches, and chose the location/gathered the info & pictures for a new Adventure Lab.

I attended an enjoyable Calypso62 event in northern Sydney, which included a geocache-themed game of battleship that kept everyone enthralled for most of the afternoon. I also hid a new cache last week, my fourth for the year, a T4 multi I've been mulling over for some months. After scouring maps and satellite images for a suitable location, I spent four days exploring, setting everything up and composing the cache page. 12 to 15 new caches in one day? Must be a different game :).

Not necessarily a different game, but certainly a different playing field.  I would love to be in an area like yours. I did learn about a new Wildlife Preserve area, that if they allow Geocaching, I will be placing some there that will be more like what you have.

The caches I placed today are a portion of over 50 for an upcoming state-wide event. The cache pages were done last week, the areas had been scouted ahead of time, so it really only took a few minutes today for each one.

I did attend an event, after which the CO escorted a gaggle of the uninitiated through a Where I GO cache in her hometown.  It was a my first of that cache type, and a milestone at 400 finds.  A gentleman amongst the gaggle, from way out in Seattle, also reached a milestone with this cache.  It was his 56,100th.  Wow.

Only 55,700 to catch up!  ;)

2019 Intl GC Day Gameplan

Plan: Drive into town and go to dinner at around 6-ish.

Subplan: Leave the house just before 4:00. Hit three DNF's (one a true NEMESIS cache) in town. Allocate about a half-hour for each one to find, or give up.

Execution:

  • Left home at 3:45. Ten minute drive.
  • First cache (last attempt: 20 minutes). Walked into the cemetery, looked down, there it is.
  • Second cache (last attempt: 15 minutes). Drove into the parking lot; saw the funky sign on the LP before coming to a complete stop.
  • Third (Nemesis) cache (last attempt: well over an hour)  on-scene for less than three minutes. Team Cap'n says, "Hey." "What?" I turn to her. She s-l-o-w-l-y lifts her gorgeuous brown eyes straight up over her head to a branch ten feet high. Bam.

At dinner at 4:30. Call me Grandpa.

Saturday was the date of a fundraising event for an organization for which I am a Board member, in a nearby town where I had no easy unfound caches nearby (the unfound were puzzles I have not yet solved, or ones I have previously attempted and not yet found).  There simply was no time and I did not earn the souvenir.  Ah well, there's always next year!

Spent Saturday with a friend (and fellow-cacher) on a semi-local lake (65 miles from home).  Just after finding our 22nd water cache, the winds picked up, the rain came down, and we were a mile from the put-in point.  It made for an interesting afternoon.  (The waves were only 1-2', but from down low in a kayak they seemed much bigger!)  We both survived to tell the tale.

Went to a mega event down near the Rhein, hung out with old friends and met some new ones, and completed a few lab caches and regular caches around the event.  Then got to hang out with a Groundspeak lackey at a reviewer dinner.

That said, this sounds pretty awesome, and I am jealous:

I knew that this was in August but I was so busy having fun that I forgot what day it was (literally and figuratively.) Fortunately, this was an afternoon when we rented mountain bikes during our two week adventure in Alaska and went cycling along the Tanana River near Fairbanks. We picked up four caches along the way so I see that I did earn the souvenir.

I saw you stopped by at Geocache 612 as well, just 3 days after us.  We managed to visit it in the morning on its 19th birthday (although I haven't gotten to logging yet). Gets me to triple jasmer :)
