NFC Tags in geocoins

Has anyone made a geocoin with an NFC tag?  If so, who was the manufacturer?

Wait... NFC geocoins? That sounds interesting. But for what purpose? (I can't read German, plus I'm too impatient to research if the answer doesn't pop up right away)

RFID tags can hold a decent amount of text.  They can direct the phone to a web address.  So a coin could be set with coin missions, stories, even cryptic puzzles leading to a Mystery cache.

 

Tags can be locked so nobody can edit them, or password protected so only people who know the password can edit them.  Or left open to all.

 

I thought of sticking an RFID tag inside a sealed “birdhouse”, as a very high difficulty stage of a cache.  Whatever you use the tags for, you could pretty much do that in Geocoin form.

So interesting! Gosh I am out of touch. I would worry about opening my phone up to read a tag that could possibly be malicious?

Still don't understand the difference between RFID and NFC. This article is pretty good... I automatically trust the information because of the 90's rap reference, OPP, lol.

That article defines it pretty well.  "NFC" is on a phone, and so it can read and write data, ever to another device such as a phone.  Although "RFID" is a storage card that the phone can read and write, but the card can't write to anything, the "NFC" term is used in a general way to apply to all devices that have this technology.
