Getting back into it...

Hi folks, I've been away from geocaching for about 10 years or so. Obviously the tech is very different now (no smartphones in 2006...). I used to do most of my caching in the evenings while travelling on business trips - it was a fun way to get some exercise and get off the beaten path a bit in the different parts of the world I'd visit. Back then I used a combination of GSAK, a Garmin handheld GPS and a PalmOS(!) device to assist me. I particularly liked using GSAK to pre-plan a list of caches along a route I intended to travel or in a new area I would be visiting.

Fast-forward to now, and one of my kids has expressed an interest in getting back into the hobby. So, what are some popular options currently? Primarily, I think what we'd like to do is to plan out some cycling routes around our city and stop for caches along the way. Should we just grab the official app, or is there another favourite? I have no problem re-upping my Premium membership and we have iOS & Android devices, an external bluetooth GPS receiver, and the old Garmin GPS unit we can use.

Thanks,

The official app is fine (and the price is right), but you might also like to check out Cachly (on iOS) and/or Locus Map (on Android).  These are full-featured official partner apps that can work either online, or fully offline like a Garmin.  I'd dare say, they're feature-competitive against handheld GPS units.  (It's controversial; there are many threads on phone-vs-GPS.  It all works.)

Anyway, that's my opinion.  Welcome back.
