+K'n'I Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 I am traveling to Europe for 2 weeks in May. I want to do some geocaching while there. I did not want to spend $100 on garmin European maps. Any suggestions how i can do it with a gps without the maps. I will not have a cell phone either. Tks k’n’I Quote
+msrubble Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 You can get free maps from OpenStreetMap. There's a bit of a learning curve in building the maps you want, so start poking around early. 1 Quote
+Viajero Perdido Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 And of course, maps are totally optional for the cache-finding part; just follow the arrow. Some of us old-timers do remember caching without maps. But if your unit can use 'em, get' em. OSM rocks. Quote
+colleda Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 I cached in Europe last year without maps. Used PQs and GSAK to load my Garmin with caches in places/cities I was likely to visit. Or, one can prepare the day before by loading a PQ (if you don't use GSAK). Yep, I just followed the arrow. Quote
+StefandD Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 OpenFietsMap provides maps for Europe for hikers and cyclists. Quote
+GerandKat Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 You might want to look at this wiki... We usually use the freizeitkarte which is quite nice to use! Quote
+HHL Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 These maps are highly recommended: Freizeitkarte - Overview EN Hans Quote

These are the ones I use, but if a better option exists out there, I'd love to hear your experience. 11 hours ago, msrubble said: You can get free maps from OpenStreetMap. Yes, there is nearly no learning curve to install maps from Freizeitkarte.de And you may select different map designs (click here). Actually, these maps look much better (imho) than those from the competitors. Hans 1 Quote

+speakers-corner Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 Hi K'n'l, Where are you traveling to in Europe and which Garmin GPSr do you have? This is a site that I use a lot when traveing in Europe. Most of the countries are listed and you can either download a finished map for an SD Card or for using with Basecamp / Mapsource. http://garmin.opentopomap.org/ here are some more links http://www.freizeitkarte-osm.de/garmin/en/ http://download.freizeitkarte-osm.de/garmin/1903/ (download the files ending in img.zip) http://www.raumbezug.eu/osm-garmin_en.htm (all maps for Europe have just been updated yesterday / today) Have fun looking around and enjoy your trip in May Quote

+Hooligan14 Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 Also heading to Europe in May and have submitted 2 requests to Openstreetmap over the last month, including manuals builds of 4 cities. Any feedback regarding timeframe for map builds to arrive? May have to invest in City Navigator Quote

Any feedback regarding timeframe for map builds to arrive? May have to invest in City Navigator It usually doesn't take more than a few minutes. You should get two email messages. The first will indicate that the request has been accepted and is being put into a queue, then the second one will contain a link to the results. Check your spam folder to make sure that you at least got the first message. There was one time when apparently someone initiated a whole bunch of requests and I didn't get the results for several hours but the first message should get returned almost immediately. I just tried to connect to garmin.openstreetmap.nl and the server is currently extremely slow in responding. I don't recall ever seeing it so unresponsive and I've created a lot of mapsets using the site. 1 Quote
+on4bam Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 Most of the time is's within half an hour worst case a few hours. If you want maps right away just select the country maps and download the files directly without waiting. Quote

OpenStreetMap doesn't provide maps for Garmins, so I'm guessing you're probably referring to garmin.openstreetmap.nl. That site currently has some issues and isn't working. This site has a list of others who make maps for Garmins using OSM data. While I haven't used it myself, I've heard good things about BBBike.org. Quote

When I submitted a request there were 215 requests in the queue. I don't think I've ever seen more than a dozen or so in the queue previously. It's probably going to take a couple of days to get response times typical of what I'me used to Quote
