Waymarking in France and ....

For the end of May / beginning of June my girlfriend and I booked a guided coach trip to France aaaaand ... [drumroll] ... Monaco(!). We will also spend some time in Italy, but let's concentrate on France and Monaco. I have completely different thoughts about these two countries.

France

We have been to France before and were able to log visits of 26 geocaches and 294 waymarks. The geocaches were just Traditionals and Multis, so we will try to find other Cache types like Wherigo, Webcam etc. Regarding Waymarking we plan of course to post some waymarks in France, because we haven't posted any waymark in France yet. And we will of course plan to post them in categories that we can't find easyly elsewhere, like French Benchmarks, Monuments Historiques Français or Histoires de France (French historical markers). So, if you know any categories that you think are easy to find in France, but not that easy in Austria, let us know.

Monaco

We haven't been to Monaco yet, so we will hopefully add that country to both our geocaching and Waymarking map. Monaco is the second smallest country in the world. Right now there are 86 waymarks and 34 geocaches. We will be there just for one day or less, so we don't have big plans. Most of all we want to find at least one or two geocaches and of course post and visit at least one waymark. But, because that sounds quite easy, I set myself another goal. I will try to post a waymark in a category, that has yet no waymark in Monaco, like for example Independent Pharmacies. Oh, and another (fun) goal might be to post the 100th waymark in Monaco, which might be impossible, if somebody else does it before we get there or simply because we can't find the missing 14 new waymarks. So, if you were to visit Monaco for a few hours, what would you do?

What is Waymarking?

You may think of it like... the place where Virtuals went when they became grandfathered. :)

As long the place you want fits any existing category, you can submit a new waymark... just another interesting location for others to visit, and log on http://www.Waymarking.com/

castle, casino, racetrack (the Grand Prix course), churches, post office, airport, local tourist attraction, monarchs of the world, worldwide cemeteries, grave of a famous person,

There are a few categories that are not exclusively French, but more common there than in other countries. Lavoirs and Dovecotes come to mind. Both are not well documented in a central data source in the web. You will not be able to prepare, either you come across one or you don't.

And since you visit Monaco, you will be near the coast, so don't forget all those maritime categories.

You also have Worldwar I and II categories, churchyard cemeteries, fishing port, romance churches and architecture, renaissance architecture, space invaders, way of saint james, lighthouses, beach huts (all maritimes like FI67 wrote) and also all militaries (non specific veterans and specifics, military displays, museums,...), gender separated entrance, la famille bonaparte, and may be a lot i forgot...

Have fun

Actually, in   Waymarking's own FAQ..." Waymarking was born out of our experience with Geocaching and in response to the huge interest created by Locationless caches. The Geocaching.com website was never designed to support the unique challenges posed by these particular caches, so a new solution in Waymarking.com was born".

Owners of Locationless were allowed to decide if they wanted to change their caches over to Waymarking categories.  Not all did.

 - There were quite a few Locationless caches masquerading as Virtuals (find a benchmark was one) though . :)

We were around early enough to have a couple Locationless caches found.

Look on our profile, click on 'em, and get a rough idea I guess.

Thank you. Now I understand better. I don't plan on doing any of these. Geocaching is enough for me.

Racetracks is a fabulous idea. I can't believe that nobody has yet created that waymark in Monaco. There will be a race a few days before we get there, but I hope that I find a sign or something to prove that my photos show the streets that are used in the actual race.
Official Local Tourism Attractions is also a good idea. I've posted and visited in that category, but there's no waymark in that category in Monaco yet.

European Post Offices will also be on my list. It's embarrassing that I have neither posts nor visits in that category, although there are tons of them in my hometown.

Some categories are already covered in Monaco and on my grid (like Grave of a Famous Person), but you made my list a little longer. Thanks a lot.

Lavoirs has to be on my list. Either I post one or visit one, but this category will be on top of my list. I found one in Nizza (Nice), but I'm not sure, if that would be accepted, because there seems to be no "house".

Dovecotes might be harder to find in the cities, but I will keep my eyes open for those too.

AND I hope to find a Martime Museum somewhere on the way. There's one in Monaco, but we might be there just for a few hours and not find the time to see everything I want. Unfortunately there are no Martello Towers in France. Thanks for the great idea.

Some great idea that I will also add to my list. Thank you so much.
