New Display Mode: Map with Compass Overlay

Recommended Posts

Other apps that I have used had a display mode where I could see the map with a semi-transparent compass overlay. I found this to be the most useful display mode and used it all the time.

Groundspeak's Geocaching app has a black strip that shows your current heading (in numbers), and has a mark for the direction of the cache/waypoint. However, I don't find this nearly as useful as the graphical semi-transparent overlay with a compass rose and arrow.

Even though I don't navigate with the app, I think the OP's description would be a good navigation screen option.

It sounds like the type of view I use with my GPSr.  I use the map view on my GPSr, with two data fields at the top of the map.  One data field shows a directional pointer of what direction the cache coords are at relative to my path, the other data field shows my distance from the cache coords.

For reference, here are screen shots from two other apps, showing a directional arrow:

Geooh Live has a unique compass overlay that fades in/out depending on phone orientation so you can see the underlying map. Hold the phone vertical and you see the map, hold the phone flat and you see the compass. The compass gradually fades in/out as you change orientation.
