Release Notes (Website: region names) - July 2, 2018

Recommended Posts

With today’s release, we are rolling out the remaining pieces of a project to update some of the region names in our database. This roll out may take multiple days to complete. You can find the full list of changes below.

  • The updates reflect changes that have happened in the world (e.g. regions in France).
  • Regional names are now more in line with what is currently accepted by the United Nations.
  • We use the Google API to pre-fill region fields on the geocache edit page, so cache owners do not have to manually choose the region where their cache coordinates are located. If a region name in our database is different from the region name in the Google API, the region pre-fill is not possible.

HQ’s Nicole (nykkole) and Alex (itscharttime) are watching the thread to answer questions whenever possible.

Any posts in this thread should relate to features in this release. Comments unrelated to the release may be removed. Please direct unrelated comments to other appropriate threads. Thanks!

YAY... St. Kitts and Saint Kitts will finally be united as one!

Aww… I’ll lose a country from my total.

Not "Macau"?

I think Macao is an older spelling. It's Macau on Wikipedia, and seemed to be the generally used name when I went there. (... went to Macau, that is, not to Wikipedia.)

Hmmm, lost 2 countries due to the virtual merge of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba.

In this case we went with the spelling on the official UN country list, which currently is "Macao".

I'll be darned. It's Macao on that government's website, and - digging further - it looks like both versions are considered correct.  Macau does seem to be used more often, but... Whatever.  :)

Sorry for the red herring.
