I think last year’s virtual reward program was very successful. Why not do a similar thing with webcams this year?  Reward webcams to a limited amount of hiders (use same basic selection process as virtual rewards) so that the quality of the new webcam caches are good. Lots of issues regarding webcams, but leave it up to each CO to police them as they see fit.

This is old, but YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

This would be good, but I would add, only allow new ones in places without any now. At least for the first release. Example using Australia. We have four Webcams; three in SA and one in Victoria. If there was a limited release, none should go to those states as they have at least one Webcam. Give any to states without any. In places where states are small, such as in the USA, maybe several states could be 'grouped' together before deciding to give another Webcam there. In fact, as the USA has many Webcams, I would argue, at least for another limited release, none go to the USA, but parts of the world with none, or very limited numbers.

Someone in the north of Queensland would have to drive about 3,000kms to get to the closest one. The USA has LOTS of Webcams in comparison, about 18 times as many.

Great point!

...I still believe that some sort of a webcam reward similar to the virtual reward would be a welcome addition to Geocaching.

For those naysayers out that that oppose it, simply do not participate in finding the new ones.

Agreed. I refuse to do AL as an example!

I think that Webcam rewards would be a great idea and I would love to see more webcams.

However, Virtuals and webcams were grandfathered manly because geocaching should be about finding physical things.

...Nevertheless, I would love to see webcam rewards!

Agreed. However, geocaching should be about finding things using coordinates!

I was very excited to come across this in a podcast with Bryan Roth from April of last year concerning Webcam Caches! Please see minute 34:50 here!!!

Bryan Roth, CEO of GS, stated in an interview last year HQ talks in the works regarding webcam rewards following 4 sets of virtual rewards!!

Some virtual rewards distributions implemented this idea. So how many should China get? I'm in favor of randomness.

You can be creative with virtuals but you can't be creative with webcam caches. Take a photograph - done.

So I don't see a reason for new webcam caches.

Not true IMO!

On top of my previous comments, I think it should be on application (showing that they are keen to host a Webcam) and then randomly, suitable people are chosen from those who applied. Not everyone who applies would have enough experience. Ideally choosing people who have found at least one Webcam, so they understand what they are. This might not be relevant in all countries. I don't know how many China should get, but if they don't have any now, likely they should get one in a populated area where there is some interest in geocaching. That is if someone applies to host one.

Restrict it to people who are prepared to delete selfies.

I agree!

I mentioned China because its big, but few interest in geocaching due to the government... this was why i think it should be random selection...

Yes, I'd hope it's an opt-in process as I really have no desire to own one. The only webcams I know of around here are along the beachfront and are mainly intended so surfers can see what the waves are like before venturing over, but are too zoomed out to really identify anyone. If someone said, "That's me on the surfboard," how would I know?

Plus there's also the issue of the CO having no control over the running of the webcam, so if it's down for an extended period, what can you do? If somebody else wants to create one, fine, but not me.

In that example, a geocacher should perhaps stand just in front of the camera, at the path leading to the beach.

My webcam cache loggers usually mark themselves with a red circle on the screenshot, or something similar. Others attach an additional selfie.

I would love to see new webcam caches. And would love to maintain for one. Actually have a perfect setup for that near here; a public webcam that's been active for years already and will continue to do so, only taking pictures of individuals who consented to having their picture taken. So no privacy issues here and individual cachers will be very recognisable.

Options I've seen for webcams like the one you posted would require the cacher to have one/both hands in the air, or standing with arms out horizontal in a crucifix stance, or doing something else easily identifiable and relatively unusual so that it would be unlikely an armchair logger would find a random passer by that would fit the bill

Fixed it for you ;)

Of course, I cannot verify that. Like "writing done someone's / my own name on a log sheet" for physical caches.

There are some Webcam cache owners though who request something like a "user[name] proof" in the picture like a written sheet of paper or selfie - but even this can be faked.

From what I've seen of how much trouble people have performing the simplest of logging tasks on virtuals and ECs, I'd liken this to herding cats. It's not so much the armchair loggers that would bother me as a CO, it's having to chase up those who didn't do whatever the task was and then either don't respond when queried or get all antsy about it.

Mentioned (in another thread I guess) that we noticed one where you were asked to be Phooning , so it'd be easy to see you in the crowd....

I think that's an American word, so many non-Americans wouldn't know what that meant. I looked it up. Copied: "To stand motionless on one foot, tilted forward at the waist, with one bent arm held in front and the other bent arm held behind." And how the heck are you meant to take the photograph🤣? I need two hands for that, and then I struggle.
