USS Arizona

Recommended Posts

The USS Arizona Memorial is managed by the National Park Service.  Perhaps no geocacher has been motivated enough to secure permission from the NPS?  That's required, even for the "new" Reward Virtuals.  Or, maybe someone tried and was told "no" because of the nature of the site.  (I don't know; I'm just speculating.)

The WIG name implies your taken there. If this is the case it's no different than a virtual. You are only obtaining information. There's a virtual on the front steps of the White House and many others in the Capital area.

Someone got real motivated with this one  https://coord.info/GC7B6JK . It's a shame no one cared enough about the USS Arizona.

Wow, that is a great virtual - thanks for spotlighting it!

I don't think it's so much an issue of "not caring enough" about the USS Arizona.  As an avid student of World War II history, I care deeply about it, and it's on my "bucket list" of places to visit.  Because I haven't visited Hawaii, I cannot place my "reward virtual" there.  Instead, it will be placed near where I work.

To have a virtual cache at this special spot would require (1) someone who received one of the Virtual Rewards in August 2017, who (2) lives in Hawaii, or visited Hawaii recently, and (3) values this spot above all other choices for use of their Virtual Reward.

There's about a dozen waymarks on the Memorial itself, probably more (I saw one off the coast of the island...coordinates off by several miles).   This one submitted to the National Register of Historic Sites Category has a nice write up:

I've been thinking about the waymarks while reading this thread. I try to avoid Waymarking anything that would spoil a virtual. In this case, IF anyone got motivated to get approval and place a virtual at the USS Arizona, I hope they require visit proof other than any information provided in the waymarks since the waymarks were there first.

I guess I'll be in the minority here, but I don't think every place needs a geocache. I have been around geocachers who are out for only the smiley, and have heard things like "I couldn't see the plaque, so we had to wait until some people got out of the way to answer the questions."  Those people may have been looking at the last place a loved one drew breath, and the reverence of the moment didn't need games being played.

I have been to one memorial cache and that one was hidden by a family member. It gave me a feeling of cheapening the site and lessening the reason I was supposed to be there. Remember, in most of those places, one is treading upon sacred ground.
