+Nickag73 Posted February 25, 2018 Posted February 25, 2018 It would be a nice feature if Geocaching would bring the iPhone app of geocaching to Apple carplay. Let me know of any theories or rumours. Thanks! Nickag73 2 Quote
oojamaa Posted May 1, 2018 Posted May 1, 2018 +1 for this feature. I would be very userful (and safe), when I can easily navigate to cache via Apple CarPlay screen. Quote
+rcccraft Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 Carplay is only possible if the coding is corrected. I have found alpha and beta versions of the geocaching app, and they DIDN'T have carplay. If you want Carplay, the code HAS to be either Dockerfile OR CSS. Quote
+rcccraft Posted September 9, 2018 Posted September 9, 2018 Well, I would agree on Carplay. but its just going to be laggy. Quote

Even if they fix the code to be compatible, there's still a much bigger hurdle to cross: Apple's approval for it to be a CarPlay app. Not every app can be used with CarPlay, often for safety reasons. For example, it wouldn't make any sense for game apps to be used with CarPlay, because that's clearly unsafe. Even the small number of available CarPlay apps are stripped down such that they don't encourage unsafe driving (e.g. the built-in Messages app will only read out text messages audibly and won't display the text, because that could lead to drivers reading the text instead of watching the road). If the Geocaching app were to be used with CarPlay, how would you envision it would work? It couldn't show a map of all the caches, because that would lead to drivers opening up caches and reading things. The app doesn't have any routing functionality, so that's out too. What's left? It could show you a straight-line path to the cache, but that isn't useful or safe when driving, because the driver would constantly have to look at the map to determine how to get there. If you look at the list of third-party apps that are available for CarPlay, you'll see that they're pretty much all either music, radio, or audiobook apps. Some map apps will soon be available, but those are only suitable because they can do routing with audible directions. Geocaching just doesn't fit into the same model of being audio-oriented. Quote
+gegy Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 Yes, a carplay screen in the geocaching app would be very very usefull. It must not give so much detail, but can show chaches nerby your route. 1 Quote

If Carplay can do that, all that needs to be done is have The App send notifications of nearby caches. But if it's a cache-rich area, that could become a distraction from driving. Quote
+p0cy Posted September 3, 2021 Posted September 3, 2021 At least, you can navigate to the cache using Maps (click on the little car symbol on top off the screen). And that app is carplay compatible. Very useful. Then normally, you go out off your car to GZ... Quote
+sloth96 Posted December 29, 2023 Posted December 29, 2023 Do any of the API partners offer carplay integration? Quote
