GPX or GGZ

In non technical language, could someone please tell me the main difference/s between a GPX file and a GGZ file.

I use GSAK and usually download a GPX file from it into my GPS and also onto my tablet in the Locus App.  Does the GGZ carries the same information, and if so, is there anything to be gained by changing?

GGZ files do NOT contain additional waypoints like GPX files do.

Aside from additional waypoints (which can be loaded with a separate .gpx file), the ggz and gpx files will have the same information. The advantage of the ggz format really shines if you're loading a lot (ie, more than 10,000) of geocaches onto your device. If you only load one or two pocket queries at a time, then you may not notice much of a difference in performance.

How is that determined?  When I down(?)load a PQ from here, I save it directly into my GPSr's GPX directory, (or now into the GPX directory on the microSD chip inside the GPSr.  That's still uploading?

That's convenient.  So every time someone contacts them about a problem with GGZ files, it's not their problem.

"Download" and "upload" are traditionally used in reference with your computer with other sources, including networked and remote (internet) being peripheral. While you are saving files from the geocaching.com servers to your device, the files technically get processed through your computer's resources before being written to the GPS.

In other words, anything sent from the internet to your computer is a download, and anything sent from your computer to the internet or a connected peripheral is an upload.

Nothing is "sent from the internet", your computer "retrieves from the internet"

Data flows from your computer > upload, data flows to your computer > download. So easy...

As for GGZ files from GSAK, use the GarminExport macro, it gives you a lot of control on how data is send to your GPS, including changing the way caches are displayed (I have favorite points displayed before the cachename, like 10_cache)
