Messaging problem

I received an email from geocaching.com this morning that said I had a message from a fellow geocacher. I read the message in the email and went to both geocaching.com and to the iPhone app to reply. Neither location had this new message in my list of messages. I waited four hours and still cannot see the message. Where has this message gone and why can't I see it on geocaching.com or the app?

Is it possible that rather than a Message from the Message Center, it was actually an email through your profile? They appear somewhat similar when they appear in your email inbox. 

The subjects are different.

Message Center messages arrive with the subject line, "Geocaching: travelingsages, you have a new message from __________!"

Emails arrive with the subject line "[GEO] _________ contacting travelingsages from Geocaching.com"

Both ways to contact a user are available on the geocacher's profile page.

Thanks for your reply. I guess that I assumed that all messages now went through the Message Center. I didn't realize that you could still send emails through the profile.
