Emailing through profile - opens mail app?

Just noticed something that seems new to me.

When emailing another cacher, using the "Send e-mail" link in their profile, then it goes to a "mailto:" command if that cacher has revealed their email address. So then I get a prompt to choose one of my email providers and send an email to the cacher via my regular email. This seems new to me.  IIRC, the Groundspeak email system would apply for such cachers.

Is this a new and permanent alteration in how the email system functions on the site, or this is temporary/unintentional, or has it always worked this way and I just didn't notice?

The Groundspeak email system still applies when choosing "Send e-mail" for cachers that have their email addresses hidden. That seems unchanged.

The old profile page still uses the existing Groundspeak email system both all cachers regardless of whether they've hidden their email address or not. But the new profile page definitely uses a mailto: URI for cachers with a visible email address.

Interestingly, clicking on the mailto link did not open up a Compose Email window as I expected it to. It just opened a new, blank, browser window. I just checked the desktop config file for my mail client (Claws Mail) and it does have the proper "MimeType=x-scheme-handler/mailto;" line. I wonder what's up with that? I'll have to try this with Firefox and see if the behaviour is browser specific or not.

Ah, thanks for reminding me about the 'old' profile page.
