Knew what geocaching was but never had a GPS unit. Then neighbor across the street got started and about 2 weeks later wife got a new Droid phone.

 

So now I borrow her pink phone at night to run around and hunt in the dark OR I attempt to find the caches on my lunch hour w/o a GPS and just rely on the printed maps.

 

Having fun and introduced the kids to it. Lot of fun to be had as a family. Just upgraded to PM and am hoping to find a GPS in my stocking. Have logged about 50+ caches in two months.

My wife and I began Geocaching just this year and have been enjoying it very much. We live in Green Bay, WI and have a weekend place in Door Co. WI where it is a beautiful area to Geocache in. There are (5) state parks in the county, so lots of places for great hides. This has been a great way to get exercise and seeing places we never knew existed.

Our family is new here as of this summer. We're in central Iowa, north of DesMoines. We're looking on caching as a great hobby and exercise too. Kids always get excited to go, even after nanos! :rolleyes:

I'm preparing to hide our first cache as a 50th bday for my hubby.

I mostly lurk nowadays. Regardless of the original topic, most threads turn into whine and gripe fests. Also, I no longer open threads after 50 posts because by then, surely everything of merit has already been covered. By the way, this thread was at 48 posts when I opened it - barely made it!

I guess you would call me a lurker and a nubee even though I remember the first cache, and I have been a member since 07. Though I have always been interested in geocaching I did not get my GPS until I was diagnosed with cancer. My wife gave me an eTrex legend to get me out walking after my first surgery, well with the battle and other of life's responsibilities I have not had the time to go out caching as much as I would have liked. But now I am feeling better and have made the time to get out more and my numbers will be climbing.

I live in Sweden and I started geocaching just a couple of days ago. I was bored to death so I googled "cool hobbies" and voila! Introduced it to my friends and they all got hooked! Using my w995 to find caches and it works somewhat OK, but I've got my eyes locked on a Garmin Oregon 450...

:anitongue: Hello everyone from High-n-Low! Thought we would get our first post out of the way with an intro. We are based out of the wonderful city of St. Charles, IL USA. We have been caching for about 4 months now. Kind of happened all by accident. I was checking out the App Store on my iPhone and discovered the free version of Geocaching.com. Fired the app up and there was a cache across the street from where we were having dinner. We decided to check it out and the rest is history! We have found this to be a great way to get exercise and work on our tans, also inadvertently learn about our passion for hating mosquitoes! Since we starting caching we have found numerous forest preserves and great spots to learn about local history. Well thanks for listening (reading :anitongue: ) and hopefully one day we can get to some events and meet some locals. Cheers! :D

I have been lurking these forums for quite some time and only post when I absolutely have to. I haven't been geocaching for very long but my family has already logged 121 finds. We quite love the game and hope to be playing for years to come.

 

Howard_Family consists of myself (formerly Pdj79), my wife c-how, and our 2 daughters, Pinto and Mouse. We cache as a family and never by ourselves. Sometimes it'll be just me and one of the girls or just me and my wife. We love the challenge of the hide and, while still green, are learning the ropes real quick. We started small, mainly doing P&Gs and LPCs, but have started branching out and are now doing tougher terrain difficulties as well as Puzzle caches and are working on several challenge caches as well.

 

We are located out of Noblesville, Indiana (a suburb of Indianapolis) and sometimes will cache with either my brother's family (team hoosierduckman) or my wife's mother and boyfriend (hoosier hooligan), who we recently converted on a small cache run just north of the Michigan border.

 

The thrill of the hunt is what keeps us going. The negativity on these boards do not sway our resolve. We hope to cross paths with any and all on here. Happy hunting.

We (wife, son, me) just started 3 weekends ago. I had a book on GC for about 6 months, and never opened it. Finally did and was hooked.

 

We have about 13 finds, and we generally do a few every weekend. We're not going to pump up the numbers this way, but it is all about the hunt and it's a great way for the family to get outside and to have some fun.

We like to read these posts because it gives us a feel for what geocaching should be about. When we first started we thought it a great idea and fun, take the kids out in the fresh air enjoy a walk with a purpose find treasure and put something back etc. etc.

I have to admit we are no longer sure, there seem to be cachers out there that want to set the rules themselves and take it very seriously indeed. and maybe dont realise that they are spoiling the fun for others.

It is fast becoming a turn off. Thank goodness we bought the GPS as a hiking accessory and not just for geocaching.

I bought my GPS back in May 2007 and have been a member here since then. Until several days ago I just never seem to be able to find time to do any geocaching or even learn about it. Since I couldn't "find" the time, I decided to "make" some time to do it. Less than two hours ago, I went geocaching for the very first time and found my first cache! I am kind of excited about it and definitely plan to make geocaching a part of my life. The cache I found (GC23NJG) is located only 0.22 miles from my home and I drive by it nearly every day of the year. After finding the Drunken Fish cache, I think I am hooked. No pun intended. But no, in answer to your original question, I haven't done any lurking here in more than three years, even though I have been a member all that time. But I think all that is going to change! I am still a newbie and I want to thank each and every one of you in advance for the help and advice you will give me on this new and wonderful journey.

I always lurk for a while before getting involved with any forum ;)

Been caching now for only a few weeks, quite enjoying it as it gives me a reason to get out of the house with my son and is a cheap hobby.

I am specialising in sneaky hides as there are far to many tupperware boxes, three more going out tonight! Got some great ideas off here for sneaky's and I'm developing a few ideas myself :antenna:

Hi, my name is Steve...caching name, DashleyRVA. I also go by dash and my girlfriend is Ashley, thats where the name came from. RVA is for Richmond VA.

 

I started caching this summer and am at 420 finds right now...and I've hidden 30...which I am almost more proud of than the finds.

Greetings all,

 

I actually rarely read the forums but came this day with an appeal: see "Help In French Polynesia" under the Getting Started topic.

 

I was given a very cool pathtag from a friend at a totally different venue, and once I logged it and went to see what geocaching was about, I was hooked ! I attempted several cache hunts without a GPS at all, and found a few amazingly! Now I have the real thing and what a difference LOL !

 

Since my boyfriend and I take our dog everywhere and we LOVE hiking and cycling, caching adds just that little bit more for fun!

I bought a Garmin etrex and can't upload coordinates from website. Something to do with serial port and not usb blah, blah, blah, hearing words, no idea what it means. I know it can be done because a firend did it for me from his pc but I can't do it from mine.

 

Any suggestions? Pref in 'idiots guide/downloading for dummies' format.

Hello everyone!

Two days ago I would have been a lurker, but I've recently gotten involved in the forums! I'm fairly new to caching, and pat of the team Chazowntrekerz. All of us are newbies, I did my first cache back in June, and the really got into it, bought my own GPS in September! It has been an adventure ever since! We've started up a team blog to share some of our adventures (and also build some revenue to fund our adventures through ad placement lol :-p ;-)) so feel free to check it out and comment if you have any thoughts!!!

That's what I am using, but I have been manually entering all coordinates ~ had no clue you 'could' do it by pc. I will be watching for replies to your query :)

Hello! I'm a little less new, and have posted a few times, so not sure if that qualifies me as a "lurker".

 

I'm a stay at home mom with an almost 3 year old son who loves finding "caches". The dad of our crew is not that into caching. I heard of geocaching quite some time ago, created an account, but was never able to do any caching b/c I didn't have a GPS unit. This September, I got a Garmin eTrex at a garage sale for $5. Best $5 I ever spent! In about 2 months, we just got our 100th find and have really enjoyed it. (and been very frustrated by a few sneaky local hiders!)

 

Hopefully in the future I can upgrade my GPS, as currently I have a huge paper trail of coordinates so I can have them all with me when I'm running around town!

Rookie geocacher here.

 

Have had an Oregon 400t for awhile now that I've used for hunting, hiking, fishing, and work (agricultural lab tech and have occasional have field work that GPS comes in handy for). Had someone ask about its features recently and so I looked at the geocaching menu option (that I've always ignored until then since it just pointed to the garmin website and figured it was some paid for service) and decided to find out what it really was about. Well, I had no idea it was an outdoor game (When it comes to electronics, I usually assume 'cache' to refer to the memory in some way), so I decided that since I like spending time outdoors anyways, I could add a new activity to involve myself. So far just been checking out the urban caches near my home and reading up on guides, tips, and other helpful information posted here but have been enjoying myself so far.

Hi, I'm very new to this exciting sport and have only achieved one cache thus far. Only received my Oregon 550 yesterday and am stumbling around in the dark a little when it comes to making full use of it's abilities. I thought it might be something like the iphone app so that I could simply tap the icon and it would show all the nearby caches. However it appears I have download them from garmin.com which appears to only list a few. If there is an easier way I'd sure appreciate some help.

 

I cannot wait to get out there and get some caches under my belt and learn more about this sport.

You're right it's not polite to lurk in the background. I've been geocaching for almost two months and now have 58 finds and 4 geocoins (love em) out in the wild. We go out for a few hours each weekend, as time and energy allow. I've been searching the forums for about two weeks, mostly looking for clues on how to find my missing geocoin and 2 trackables. To have them go missing has been an eye opener and has taken a lot of fun out of the game for me. The best solution seems to make proxies and send them around - feels so shallow, but apparently necessary. This site is truly impressive and my husband and I will be joining to support it.

I usually hit the forums about 2 to 3 times a week. I've noticed that over the last week or so it's really gotten ugly in here. Some of the more potent exchanges in the old forums were alot of fun to follow. Nowadays it seems to be just plain mean. Now I shall go back to lurking.

 

I have found that lurking is a good way to obtain informaiton but there are times when you need to chime in and voice your own opinion without getting ugly, what good does getting ugly do, you are correct or you are not...smiles and frowns from the shadows where all us lurkers are....

I know what you mean. I thought when I started this that the GeoCoins and TB's were to be moved from place to place,but I've noticed that there are some folks out there who delight in just grabbing the trackables and collecting them. That's not cricket to me. Move the little buggers along, that's half the fun. I'd like to put out a couple of TB's, but afraid they'd become missing in action.

Hi! I'm a fairly new geocacher. I've been at it since *checks* September 19th of this year, and so far I have 42 finds and 3 hides. I absolutely love it! I got into it when I accidentally discovered the free version of the Groundspeak Geocaching iPhone app, and said to myself "Hmm, geocaching. That's... a thing, right?" I downloaded it, found a cache right near my house, and immediately purchased the full app. I've been reading the forums since I've started, but I am extremely shy about "unlurking" for some reason. I live in Boston and work in Cambridge, so most of my finds have been urban, but I've also found some nice rural hides with my geocaching partners-in-crime (my father and my dog). What really amazes me is how many geocaches I've walked past in my lifetime without knowing they were there - sometimes within feet of them!

Hey all. I am Matthew. I am a fairly new geocacher. I have my two oldest kids (14 and 12) interested in geocaching. My daughter has pretty sharp eyes and spots most of them first (much to her brothers chagrin). My wife is also interested and may join in more this coming spring and summer. We live in Northwestern Ohio.

 

We are getting ready to put out a few of our own caches. A few of them will be micros and nano caches. I also have a few lock & lock boxes for larger caches.

Hi, Im not really a 'lurker' so to speak, but I do drop in once in a while to check things out and get ideas. For example, today Im looking for some information on how others are creatively using the new Garmin CHIRPS. For Christmas I got 4 of them as gifts and I got one of those trackable travel bug stickers. I am looking to see if its within acceptable guidelines to keep the CHIRP with my vehicle/TB Sticker and 'announce' a message with the TB code...i.e. someone with their CHIRP searching on near my vehicle would get a download message "Congratulations, you have discovered the Team Watkins TB code #..." Seems like it would be a neat application.
