DaveD Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 I deeply regret to inform that my friend and colleague NOAA Commander George Leigh (NGS Surveyor) passed away on June 26. George was a well respected geodesist at the National Geodetic Survey and contributed to the development and implementation of our National Spatial Reference System serving on NOAA hydrographic charting ships, geodetic field teams and performing critical administrative duties at NGS headquarters. George was passionate about the history of the agency we served and his efforts and outreach can be found in many different places on this site. He will be deeply missed by all of us who worked with him and those he helped along the way. Quote

I never had the opportunity to meet him but his BOTTLES, POTS, & PANS? – MARKING THE SURVEYS OF THE U.S. COAST & GEODETIC SURVEY AND NOAA was a great help to me as an amateur benchmarker. Quote
TillaMurphs Posted July 9, 2017 Posted July 9, 2017 Thank you for alerting us to this sad information. George was always very helpful to me. I also greatly enjoyed "Bottles, Pots, Pans...." and other information that he produced. His passion and stories will be missed. Very sad. Condolences Quote
Papa-Bear-NYC Posted July 9, 2017 Posted July 9, 2017 (edited) Alas, a great loss to all of us. I "followed his footsteps" to many an out-of-the-way place in Maine and even Canada back in the oughts (see, for example this). I always wanted to meet up with him on my yearly trips to DC but never managed it. Richard G, aka Papa Bear Edited July 9, 2017 by Papa-Bear-NYC Quote

I met him once or twice when I stopped at the NOAA buildings across the street/tracks. Always was in a good mood and happy and excited to show me stuff. Condolences to his family and the team there at NGS. Quote
