eTrex 10

Recommended Posts

I'm getting back into the game, but my last eTrex 10 was stolen, so I purchased a brand spanking new one. Super excited to get it home and install everything. I've downloaded the set up a half dozen times, installed it at least three times to my Mac, but every time I try to send a cache to my GPS, my device cannot be found. I click on the link to Garmin's site, lo and behold, it's communicating. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG ?!?!

I've registered my GPS, updated my Mac, updated safari.....

I don't remember having such a difficult time with my last one, I just want to get back in the game.

I'll give it a go when I get my computer back. I managed to set it up on my girlfriend's computer thankfully, but it would be nice for it to work on mine.

Cheers!!

The "send to GPS" button is done because the Garmin communicator plugin runs on an outdated and insecure platform. Garmin (and the other GPS manufacturers) have shown no interest in producing new plugins. As a premium member, you can load GPX files directly to your device. When you plug it into your mac, it'll show up as an external or usb storage device with the volume name "Garmin." Within that, there is a folder named "Garmin" and within that a folder named "GPX." This is where you will save your GPX files, whether you download using the GPX button on each individual cache page (not recommended) or download in bulk using pocket queries (recommended). The new send via bookmark list feature works too, but it's kinda clunky. You can also use iCaching which uses the API to search geocaching.com and access active pocket queries. You can then filter and send a set to your GPS via this program if you so choose.

As a premium member, pocket queries and/or API are the way to go. Remember that the eTrex 10 has a limited storage capacity in terms of the number of caches it can hold. You will have to delete your finds, and this can be easily achieved with bulk loading methods over individual files per cache.
