+Bonnie_und_Clyde_DE
Hello, I have the idea of a new category of waymarks. It is about "Dead Drops", as far as I know there is still no category. DeadDrops is an offline peer-to-peer file sharing network in public space. The original idea is a USB stick of any size that is embedded in a wall. In the meantime, these are available as Wlan stations. In the listing of this category, the type of the deaddrop could be requested as an obligatory entry. There is also a website for this project. There are also a lot of Dead Drops registered worldwide. The category could be a subcategory of technology. What do you think about this category? Edited July 4, 2017 by Mr&Mrs_Right Quote Link to comment
+fi67
The idea was already proposed some years ago in the old forum (so before 2012). It did not receive any support by the community then. The main concerns were vandalism and virus threads. In my opinion the main problem is permanence. Will they still exist in a few years and how long will an average dead drop be active? I think this is a very temporary thing. We have some categories from similar fields and they do not very well once the hype is over, like Yellow Arrow Lookup or Internet Cafes just to name two. +Bonnie_und_Clyde_DE
Thanks for your opinion, but the first 2 dead drops i have seen are created in 2011. One in Halle/Saale one in Leipzig. After 6 years i dont thing you can say ists a temporary thing. In Internet cafes, this is certainly due to technical progress that they are dying out. By visiting Waymarks, you do not necessarily have to connect to the dead drop. Quote Link to comment
+*Team Krombaer*
Version) meines Textes.... Grüße an alle Waymarkingfreunde Quote Link to comment
+Tuena
I had a look at the database. Canberra has 4 of which 3 are broken. Sydney has 7 of which 4 are broken, 2 are unconfirmed broken, 1 working. Hardly permanent. Quote Link to comment
+PISA-caching
In my hometown Vienna, Austria I found 15 Dead Drops in the database. 11 are broken, 1 is "unconfirmed, may be broken", 3 are said to be working (2 of them have been checked 2015 and one in 2011). Most of them were created 2010/11. The last two were created in 2015. Seems like the "hype" is over, at least here in Austria. Beside the prevelance problem: Do I want to take photos of a USB-stick in a wall and create a waymark of it? Probably not. On the other hand, if there are waymarkers who want to do it, I will not stand in their way. Quote Link to comment

I first encountered these on Open Caching North America as a cache type and they are the Glory Holes of the geocaching. I can't see Geocaching HQ allowing deaddrops that promote making a hole cementing them in place to share "data". I would not support them as a WM category. I'm going to have that mental image burned into my brain for the rest of the day - thanks, Manville Possum! Quote Link to comment

They are for sharing pornography. See - I tell people I learn LOTS of stuff when I waymark! Quote Link to comment
+cerberus1
Well, those dead drops were not invented by Geocachers and Waymarkers sharing photos. They are for sharing pornography. Crazy as it sounds, I kinda have to agree with you. They've been around years earlier than this guy claims to have "invented" the idea too. When this was first talked about in the forums (as a cache type), the other 2/3rds said that's not the brightest idea. Besides the vandalism and privacy issues, imagine you now have (along with those 1000 kiddie pics), ISIS/hate group propaganda, or bomb-making directions now on your hard drive. - If you're not an ex presidential candidate, think you can delete it all? +T0SHEA
See - I tell people I learn LOTS of stuff when I waymark! Yeah, and some of it may even prove to be useful down the road, mebbe as a trivia stumper. Keith Quote Link to comment
