which gps and why?

Recommended Posts

I currently have a Garmin etrex 10, but the disadvantage is it only gives a direction as the crow flies - a line on a blank background. This doesn't help when I am following UK footpaths, so I have reverted back to using my iphone app which is loads more useful. the trouble with this is it really drains the battery.

I am looking for a better gps that has maps and am looking currently at the garmin etrex25 or 35.

My question is this. Which GPS do you use and why?

I'm a new GC'er and have just been using my cell phone app. So I'm researching units also. Features I have to have are 1. waterproof 2. usb port - things I'd like to have are routable roads, ANT + Bluetooth and a map including Germany where I'm visiting soon. Everything I want can be found in the Garmin Monterra, but I don't think I want to spend $400 for a unit to find dollar store trinkets. (My practical side hounding me) So now I'm looking at the Garmin Oregon 600. I can get it for $200. I don't need a camera but I'm going to check and see if I can put a map on it that will give routable directions. Hope others will chime in here and we can research this topic together!

Yes, the Oregon 600 can use routable opensource maps (see the Maps page here).

They are new and more expensive, but the Oregon 7x0 series have direct (via wi-fi or bluetooth smartphone) access to Geocaching.com data, so no need to connect to a computer if you don't want to!

Thank You Atlas Cached! After dropping my phone in the lake hunting for a boating GC last week, I've been on the hunt for a waterproof gps. It's worth it to me to spend a little money on a unit that will make this hobby more enjoyable. Boy would I ever love to have that 700 and not have to use my computer at all. I see I can buy a used one for $319 ...hummmm might have to go for that one. Thanks again.

I use a water-proof box for my phone. Less than $10 at Walmart and it floats. :anibad:

And for $20-$50 you can get a power brick that will run your phone with GPS on for days.
