Trackable/Geocoin

Recommended Posts

Good morning. Can one discover a trackable without actually going to the site? My home page tells me that two people have discovered two of the trackables I placed in caches, but I'm certain they weren't physically present at the sites. Thank you for your time.

You have the tracking numbers visible in the photos of the ducks you posted. That's all that's required for someone to log a find on the coin. There are folks who go looking for trackables codes and log them as discovered. Looking at your coins the logs are from Germany, which is not uncommon for "virtual" discoveries. In many cases a code found like this will get shared so you may start seeing a bunch more "virtual" discoveries.

If you don't want your ducks logged by folks who haven't really found them I'd suggest you update the photos to blur out the tracking number and make sure you blur or hide it somehow on photos for any new trackables you send out.

There are two ways this is most commonly done. One is if the trackable has been to an event, people make lists of the tracking numbers and sometimes pass the lists around. Who knows how many people log discoveries from each list! The other is if someone has posted a photo of the trackable that shows the tracking number, then people log discoveries based on the photo. Somewhat less common is when a person includes the tracking number in their found it log (or any other type of log.) Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about any of these, except delete the Discover logs if you're sure they are bogus. (Of course, be sure that you never post the tracking number online, never, nowhere, nohow.).

Yep, I agree.

You could simply "reverse" the other two to hide the number, yet show your coin too. :)
