Washington Geocachers Club II

This is a follow-up to the original Washington Geocachers Club poll.

The vote between Kirkland and Auburn was pretty well split. Renton was mentioned as a possible location and BillP3rd has offered a meeting place there. It is the club house at his apartment complex. So, now let us decide on a date and time. That vote was leaning toward Saturday, but I figure we'll give a few more people the opportunity to vote.

Since I cant join in this club (too far away from Oregon), could there be a formal response to this "FWadmin" who is removing caches from FW parks.

One of the reasons we want to have this meeting ASAP is to devise a reply to and questions for Mister FWAdmin. So the answer is, yes.

BillP3rd's place sounds perfect for a first meeting. Any of those times will be okay for us.

I did a little poking around and found some interesting info. This page is for the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commissioners. Here is a quote from another page on the WSP site:

quote:
Commissioners

Seven citizen commissioners, appointed by the governor, set policy for the agency and hire the agency director. State Parks current commissioners include Joan Thomas, Seattle; Clyde Anderson, Spokane, Bob Petersen, Long Beach; Eliot Scull, Wenatchee; Cecilia Vogt, Yakima; Mickey Fearn, Seattle; and Joe Taller, Olympia. For more information on State Parks commissioners, see the link on this page.

The key part is that they set the policies for the agency. We might try to get in touch with one or more of these commissioners. They also have public meetings. The next two are in Eastern WA. We might be able to get some of our dry siders to help out by attending one of these meetings.

Well, I have more but dinner is ready. I'll do some more digging around before this weekend.

I ran across the same info and I agree wholeheartedly - the commissioners are who we want to target. I can probably make the next meeting in Ephrata, but we might not make it on the agenda. We need a Very Specific agenda (want do we want to change) and a VERY SPECIFIC outcome (what do we want it to look like when we've arrived at our goal).

Do we want a permit system as the end result?

Do we want no system at all?

Do we want the Park Dept to police us or do we want to police ourselves (the latter is the better way to go here - the parks budget is already stretched - a fact we might use in our favor).

It'd be good if people can start thinking about these things before the meeting, since time will be somewhat limited.

I guess for the meeting in Ephrata we would not have a chance to have anything formal done up. (Not enough time) But if someone could go to the meeting get our foot in the door. See if we can get on the agenda for the October meeting in Yakima or get some contact info for these commissioners so we can lobby them directly.

As far as a goal...The most simple goal I have is for us to have a proceedure that will allow caching in State & Local parks. Right now there is no proceedure so each of us does what we want and the park rangers each do what they want.

I'll save the rest of my thoughts for this weekend.

At this writing, the vote is evenly split. Since it is already Thursday evening, I am going to ask Bill to reserve the space for Sunday at 2:00. That will give us a bit more time to spread the word and hopefully give us the best turnout. A couple people said Saturday was definitely out for them, so that is yet another reason. This certainly does not mean that future meetings will always be on Sunday afternoons. That will be a topic for discussion.

My niece in Sultan was supposed to be having a new arrival by now - which would have made justifying the trip over easier - alas, no news is bad news.

I can't make the gathering today, but I'd certainly like to contribute to the effort. Keep me in mind as the "Eastern Liason" - if that's ok with whatever the group decides. I can still committ to attending the Park Commission meeting in Ephrata, if that is deemed to be worthwhile.

Best regards,
