+dprovan Posted January 25, 2017 Share Posted January 25, 2017 I looked at a handful of these, and in every case there was "a good reason" for being disabled; in most cases, that "good" reason is "I forgot". So if you have an interest in seeking any of those caches, I'd suggest reminding the owner by way of a note asking what the status is. It's true that reviewers often take it upon themselves to post such reminders, but if you're personally worried about these, you don't have to wait for a reviewer: you can do the same thing yourself. As someone who occasionally spends holidays in the Maritimes, I really appreciate your efforts to help clear out the chaff. That's a very important point. There are too many people who will not use the NM/NA tool. It seems that most feel it's the reviewers responsibility to do something about abandoned caches. Reviewers are not required to take any action until someone posts an NA. Last year I posted 107 NAs on abandoned caches. Only 5 of those 107 caches are still active. As a community we need to put out the message that abandoned caches and listings are not OK. If it only comes from a reviewer it looks like the community doesn't care. We have one local reviewer that is active in keeping check on caches disabled more than thirty days, and many of those caches get archived if the cache owner does not respond, which is how it should work. I don't see it as the community don't care, I think we need better volunteer reviewers willing to as one cache owner put it, forced them to go out and check their cache after several DNF's and a NM when I posted a NA on it. I don't think that asking for the local reviewers to do a sweep on neglected listings is over-stepping the community, it is a big help. I'm really sick of having CO's upset because I have used the NA feature. And the private message to the reviewer ends up with "it was called to my attention" that this cache needs attention, so the last person to post a DNF or NA gets the blame for contacting the reviewer. More to the point, for the ones that do have an NM log, post an NA if you think it's not going to get fixed. It turns out that "needs maintenance" does not automatically bring the cache to the reviewer's attention. On the other hand, NMs do get the CO's attention, and from my quick glance, many of these are only disabled because the owner forgot about them. Since I'm not in area, perhaps my ignorance of the local culture makes me miss the point of this thread, and that might mean I should stay out of it. But what I see here is a list of caches that demonstrate what happens when people don't post the NAs when they should. This might be because COs in the area don't like NAs, but the solution to that is to post quality NAs and then discuss their purpose with COs that object with them. But more importantly, because the logs indicate that many of these caches have simply been forgotten by the CO, there's no particular reason to think the CO would be upset to be reminded that they disabled the cache for the summer, and it's now January (to take one example I remember).
