OREGON 700 - unregistered

From my Oregon 300 I know, that geocaching on the GPSr works this way

- copy a geocache's GPX into the GPRs->Garmin/GPX folder

and then you are able to search for a cache with all cache information.

I just applied a factory reset to my Oregon 700, and tried to work with

GPX files.

There is no way to go into the geocaching mode of that device.

It always enforces me to register my device with geocaching.com.

It refuses geocaching without a registration.

Isn't there a way to display the geocache's details and waypoints without

registering with geocaching.com?

Garmins have a 'Default' that if you have any files/caches loaded as a Basic Member, then files/caches loaded as a Premium Member wont show ALL PM information...

DELETE any files/caches you have loaded, then load a .gpx file, making sure its from a page you have logged in to.

I have not got any Basic member files. All files were downloaded as PM member.

I did a factory reset because the Oregon would not show downloaded GPX files,

which were placed into Oregon's Garmin/GPX folder. After reset I was faced to

the registration. Had no WLAN then.

After having re-established the WLAN connection, then the registration, then all

caches downloaded to the Oregon appeared in the list of geocaches.

So it seems to be a clear NO

NO you can't use the Oregon to display GPX files without having the Oregon registered

to geocaching.com

Right?

Not a unit I know, but reading:

With a Wifi connection or through the Garmin Connect Mobile app on a compatible smartphone, all of the new Oregon handhelds will have wireless integration with Geocaching.com for Geocaching Live. Users will be able to wirelessly download cache descriptions, logs and hints, even if they’re out in the field. Once a geocache is logged as found, it will be automatically uploaded to the user’s Geocaching.com profile. Premium Geocaching.com members will also be able to sync their geocaching lists directly to their device.

Did you register it before you Factory Reset it?

Well, as I wrote in the beginning, I was unable to do anything

with Oregon's geocaching function. The only thing that was offered

was to register the device.

Yes, I had it registered in the beginning, but always had troubles to

get the caches visible in Oregon's list of geocaches, after having

transferred them to the device by USB. I did not enable WLAN though.

After re-registering with geocaching.com and having the WLAN connected

all of a sudden the previously loaded GPX files appeared in the list of

known geocaches. They remained after having disconected.

So now I wonder, how I can get any use of OREGON 700 without having

WiFi/WLAN or Bluetooth connection. It was far easier with OREGON 300.

It took several readings of this thread and a look at the Garmin manual to make sense of the what appears to be a very real problem you encountered.

The manual first discusses connecting wireless so you "can view geocaches from www.geocaching.com." To do so you must have a WIFI or BT connection active. (Note: WIFI = WLAN.) It also tells you in another section how to download caches via a computer and a USB connection, the method you and I are very familiar with.

Since I don't have an Oregon 700 series GPS I can only speculate what may have happened. Perhaps the GPS knew that the particular files were pending via a wireless connection. Any attempt to load the same files via USB caused a conflict the GPS could not resolve. When you turned on WIFI it finished processing the files and everything was happy. You might want to try downloading some new (to the GPS) caches via USB and see if they appear and persist through a power cycle. If they do, then you are okay. If not, you'll need to report the specific issue to Garmin support.

Good luck with this and please keep us informed of your progress or lack there of. :-(

The Oregon 7x0 does NOT have to be registered to use geocaching functions as with previous units, it only has to be registered (linked to the users geocaching account) to use LIVE geocaching features.

Could you please let me know how I come around the 'Register' dialog

and proceed to normal Geocaching operation? I did not manage to do so.

I have absolutely no idea what it is you are doing... I unregistered my device, reset it, and rebooted. When I select the geocaching icon.... It opens the Geocaching application with a list of geocaches stored on my device. No request to register before I can use it....

To give a reminder:

the kernel problem was: the Oregon 700 did not offer any Geocaching

functionality without a registration.

Well, I had an urgent need for the Oregon, so I went through the process of

re-registering via WiFi/WLAN. Everthing is working now. I am currently not

eager to go through the process again, to find out where something went wrong.

Reading your reports, I do believe that something must have gone wrong,

because at your site the problem did not occur this way.

I want to thank you for your patience, your suggestions and reports.

Did you ever sort this issue out ?  I have an Oregon 700 and it has played up ever since I purchased it for a small fortune.  Fortunately I got our Oregon 500 fixed so now use that.  The problem with my useless Oregon 700 is that even though I can load my Wifi address or pair the GPS with my i-phone and I can register the Oregon 700 and pair with geocaching, I can't download pocket queries or lists correctly, for some reason I get about 30 random caches locked in the gps.  I have tried the on board reset, I have tried a factory reset, I have tried removing the batteries for a day, but still get the same problem.

I have spent hours on line chat to Garmin, I have sent notes to Garmin but still get nowhere.  I has got so dire that I even tried to load caches via UB cable as I do with my Oregon 500 but the useless thing wont even do that.  The only way I can find a geocache on this Oregon 700 is to type in the co-ordinates ........... I may as well just dig out my very old Garmin E-Trex.  Very dissapointed with this device.

Has anyone else got the same issues or can anyone help with any other ideas to resolve ??
