FHWA- Federal Highways Works Administration. Once called Bureau of Public Roads (BPR), an agency tasked with engineering and building roads in national parks.

"Federal Highway Administration". No 'Works' in there. :D They do ALL roads in the US - not park roads. They allocate funding to interstates, US Highways, and then do grants and studies for state/county roads. Their biggest 'contribution' is the MUTCD - which is the regulations that state that, 'hey, stop signs have to be red, not blue'.

All,

I like the old BPR's, which came in about a dozen different agency flavors - apparently this is one of the few logged here that reads 'US Department of Commerce'. The abandoned RR grade runs through what Hayden called Butter Keg Canyon in 1871. Re-named for James George, (Yellowstone and the Great West, note 11. P. 259).

Thought about it while reading about all the activity at the 'Arch' a few miles up the river yesterday. MEL

Added Arch & NONPID BPR from 1958.
