Unusual disk

I found an interesting disk in Grand Canyon Village, near the area where you change between east loop and west loop shuttles. It appears to have no PID so I scabbed it onto the nearest mark in this data base.

 

I had never seen one quite like it, nor with so many agency stampings.

I wonder if its even a survey disk? No center datum point, appears recessed so getting a level rod over it won't work. Might be just a project marker of some sort.

"Federal Highway Administration". No 'Works' in there. They do ALL roads in the US - not park roads. They allocate funding to interstates, US Highways, and then do grants and studies for state/county roads. Their biggest 'contribution' is the MUTCD - which is the regulations that state that, 'hey, stop signs have to be red, not blue'.

So, at least as currently constituted, the "W" stands for "way" I guess.

I like the old BPR's, which came in about a dozen different agency flavors - apparently this is one of the few logged here that reads 'US Department of Commerce'. The abandoned RR grade runs through what Hayden called Butter Keg Canyon in 1871. Re-named for James George, (Yellowstone and the Great West, note 11. P. 259).
