Svebjorn Posted July 11, 2016 Share Posted July 11, 2016 Hej everyone. I am quite new here and searched the forum for 15+ minutes for an answer. How do I report a cache that is obviously missing? I was in the middle of the forest at the point where the cache should be and found quite many good places (protected from the elements and still not hidden) in the direct range and could not find anything. Can I contact the owner / creator? Can I just put a new cache myself? If this has been discussed already I would appreciate a link to the topic Greets from Sweden! Björn Quote Link to comment
+ChileHead Posted July 11, 2016 Share Posted July 11, 2016 Did you post your dnf? Is there a history of dnfs before you? Sometimes caches are just hard to find, it may be there! Do not place a replacement cache! Log your dnf which lets the cache owner know. If it looks like it's been ignored for a while, post a needs maintenance. Quote Link to comment

It may have been hidden where you didn't look, as it's in a forest the coordinates may have been off more than you expected. When you log a DNF the owner gets an email with your log and will know you didn't find his cache, no need to contact the owner a second time. And NO, you don't put a new cache there yourself. That's considered a throwdown (search the forum for that word ) Edit: I just see you haven't found/logged any caches yet so you may be surprised to see how a cache can be hidden (even in plain sight) without you seeing it. Throwdowns - How to handle them A throwdown is when a geocacher places a new geocache container when the previous geocache is missing or cannot be found. Throwdowns are placed so the geocacher can log a find on a geocache that they couldn't find and suspect is missing. Geocaches should never be replaced without the permission of the geocache owner as this frequently leads to multiple containers at the location and disputes about whether you found the "real" container and are entitled to log a find. Our policy is that geocache owners are responsible for maintenance, so as soon as they are aware of throwdowns, the physical geocache should be checked and if it is still there, the throwdown geocache should be removed. If this is not done, there will be no way for geocachers to be sure they are finding the correct geocache container. If subsequent find logs indicate multiple or inconsistent containers, it can often be a sign that a maintenance visit by the geocache owner has not taken place. In these cases, it is reasonable for the geocache owner to allow finds of the throwdown to be logged online as found because the finder generally cannot determine whether they found a throwdown instead of the original container.
