Elzy5
Anyone have a great way to geocache in offline mode, using gps only? Locus isn't working for me. Quote Link to comment
Elzy5
I read this link, it seems the full Groundspeak app won't do offline maps. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=336410 Quote Link to comment
Viajero Perdido
Android, iPhone, or what? Crucial detail. How is Locus not working for you? (iPhone Locus is something completely different.) Android Locus rocks at offline caching. Quote Link to comment
Elzy5
Android. Maps I downloaded build way to slow. Caches I downloaded still want Internet to show details and logs. Quote Link to comment
Elzy5
I have read the instructions for locus, but I just can't get it working good enough. Log addon just refuses to work period. Quote Link to comment
on4bam
Try GDAK, free and designed to work offline. If you have GSAK on a PC it works better when transferring databases. It's also an API partner. Quote Link to comment
Elzy5
That appears more for the cache list than maps. Quote Link to comment
on4bam
That appears more for the cache list than maps. ??? You can download maps for just anywhere. Once in the field you have everthing needed without a data connection. Quote Link to comment
Elzy5
Ok, so this app will use offline maps? Quote Link to comment
on4bam
Ok, so this app will use offline maps? See my first post. It's DESIGNED for offline use but works online too. Read the website for more info. Quote Link to comment
Elzy5
I read your post, but I just didn't see here, http://gdak.wolojoli.nl/, specifically that it did maps too. I will definitely try it though. Thanks. Quote Link to comment
AnnaMoritz
Anyone have a great way to geocache in offline mode, using gps only? Locus isn't working for me. Why would Locus not work? You can downlosd vector maps for offline use. You can preload PQs for offline use. (Or use an add-on like GSAK-ad-on) Locus is an API-Partner, there are also others for Android https://www.geocaching.com/mobile/partners/ For logging online - well - that won't work offline. But for all apps. Most apps have something to store your logs until you can go online again. When online, you can load online-maps, load geocaches, log ... Works perfectly for me. ohgood
Because the offline maps were way to slow and the caches that I downloaded still wanted Internet. if maps are slow, something is very very wrong. I've had locus working very fast on five year old phones, without issue. what do you mean by caches want to be online? Edited July 8, 2016 by ohgood Quote Link to comment
Elzy5
I download 100 or so, but the still won't show logs, etc when offline. As far as maps, you know how when you download maps, you download images in a certain dimension? Well, mine takes forever to load those images. I can find the cache on a blank white background before the images load. I tried with two sources. Both had same results. Quote Link to comment

Both had same results. you've found the paywall that ground speak implements in an attempt to get you to post for a premium subscription, this is not an application limitation. if you are not a premium subscriber, you only have the option of viewing the web data, while online. if offline, you only get basic information until to submit and cough up the cash to gs. as far as maps go, it could be a problem with your sdcards read/write speed, but i don't think this is the actual problem. normally when I've seen extremely slow read/write speeds the card has a corrupted file system. otherwise even class 2 cards are plenty fast enough for drawing map tiles. The old one has a toggle for maps but the new one downloads map automatically if you save a list for offline use. Quote Link to comment

Viajero Perdido
There are several ways to get caches into Locus. If you load Pocket Queries, you'll have the cache info (description, logs, etc.) available offline. If you use the "GC Offlinizer" feature while connected, you'll also have photos (spoilers etc.) available offline. Vector maps in Locus ("offline") are speedy, at least for me. If you've instead tried to download a gazillion map tiles from the "online" list, that may slow things down. (It doesn't scale well, and annoys the tile providers.) snakyjake
Another option is Delorme Earthmate for Mobile Outdoor. Quote Link to comment
Lord Cadogan
I have found that c:geo works just fine for me. It can now access the PQ's and store them offline. You can also have it store offline maps around the cache. There are also maps of each state that you can load. You just have to select the map you need to view in the app, depending on where you are. I have been out many times where I do not have a signal and it works just fine. I still depend more on my Garmin GPS than my phone, as the latter is much more accurate. Quote Link to comment
