Narna4ever
Hello My in laws just got an Garmin Oregon 600 for use for Geocaching. They just bought it and went to France for 5 weeks. But they dont have any maps for France. I manage to do a Pocket Query before they left (they live 1000km away from me, so I had to do it remotely) Am quite new to this Garmin / GPS / Maps so bare with me What do I do now? I was thinking they could by one of these maps - http://www.garmin.com/nb-NO/maps/outdoor/ https://buy.garmin.com/nb-NO/NO/prod520091.html Is this the right map for geocaching? After they have bought it, do I need this program for transfer the maps? http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4449 It is me that haft to do this remotely. Cant I just transfer the map direct from the mac to the gps? And after I have got the map over to the gps - Do they need to activate the map? And finally. The PQ that I have downloaded and transferred - will they (the caches) pop-up on the map? Thank in front of any answers Regards Kjell Quote Link to comment
+Atlas Cached
Look here at the Oregon 6xx wiki list of map sources. I highly recommend the Freizeitkarte Project maps, about half way down the list! Quote Link to comment

I have also used the Freizeitkarte Project as well as the Open Street Maps. When traveling, I have have downloaded them straight to my ipad and transferred them to my Oregon 600 -- as long as they are in the garmin .img format, just move the map to the Garmin directory on your gpsr. If you want more than one map on your gpsr, however, you should be careful to rename the maps so that you do not write over an existing map. These maps are not only free, but they are open source so you do not need to worry about activating them. And yes, the caches you downloaded to your unit should then appear on the map (provided they are within the proximity range). One thing to be aware of, however, is that you may also need to adjust the zoom levels on your gpsr (Map Setup - Advanced Options), which allows you to adjust at what zoom level the caches will begin to appear.
