What am I missing?

After I solve the simple task of counting the number of letters im 2 names, I am then supposed to add those numbers to come up with new coordinates. Problem is, what am I adding those numbers to? N 41° 23.543 W 087° 44.553 is current coordinates and the numbers are 4 and 9. Total noob here so please excuse the ignorance.

I obscured (changed) the coordinates in your example so as not to spoil the mystery cache or multicache that you are trying to find. My made-up, random coordinates will work for getting the basic math help you're asking about.

Generally, numbers are added/subtracted to/from the thousandths of a minute. So in the modified example, you'd get:

 

N 41° 23.543 W 087° 44.553 ->

N 41° 23.(543+4) W 087° 44.(553+9) ->

N 41° 23.547 W 087° 44.562
