Are there any free apps for students

Recommended Posts

I will be teaching a unit on latitude and longitude. As an extension for students who already get it, I will take a small group of students geocaching, then they will hide caches for their classmates to find. I have checked with my local AEA agency for GPS units, but they are all checked out the week that I need them. Are there any good, free apps out there that I can have students download on their phones? It would need to be an app that shows latitude and longitude to enhance the skills they are supposed to be learning.

If you're just finding coordinates on a map, smartphones include a map App. On Android phones, type coords, and Google Maps will place a point at those coords and a point on the closest street.

The iPhone App store has a cool free compass App called "Commander Compass Lite" which shows direction and distance. Search the App stores for "free GPS".

As mentioned, there are free Geocaching Apps. You might test those to see if any of them don't require logging into an account to find a temporary cache.

Oops, I didn't catch that about hiding caches.

You don't intend for these caches to be hidden via the Groundspeak site, I assume/hope.

If you are intending for them to hide "temporary" caches just for the sake of other students finding them, then kunarion's suggestions should help.

For any activity through the Groundspeak site, the students would need GS accounts, and any hidden caches would need to conform to GS Guidelines.
