magellan315
Its been ten years since I bought a GPS and my needs have changed. I am looking for a GPS that I can download a route to and has audible turn by turn directions. I need the ability to change batteries if the power dies. Any thoughts? Quote Link to comment
+splashy
Goto gpscity.com and look at the video's of the different models. What you're asking about all models can do. Quote Link to comment
+coachstahly
You'll need 24K Topo maps for turn by turn on a Garmin (unless you download another routing system like City Navigator). The Montana needs a speaker mount for spoken (words) turn by turn, otherwise it beeps like the older units. The Monterra has a built in speaker but is quirky to use (still and IMO). Not sure what the newer Oregon does with turn by turn. New Montana coming out (or out now) has GLONASS added and should be quite similar in use to the Montana. Most familiar with Garmin, but I'm sure there are some other units. You can always use your phone for turn by turn directions since it will most likely be used in the car and plugged in charging while in use. Quote Link to comment
+Mineral2
The Garmin Montana is the only hand-held that I'm aware of that will speak turn-by-turn directions to you. Quote Link to comment

+coachstahly
The Monterra has a built in speaker and will do voice, turn-by-turn directions. Quote Link to comment
magellan315
Well this shows how long its been since I have bought a GPS. Let me try to narrow things a little. I want a GPS for bicycling and Geocaching. Beeping so I know that a turn is coming up will be fine. Does that help narrow the field any? I am not looking for cycling specific GPS. +Mineral2
I think any of the current models will be fine for you. The advantage of the 64 and Oregon series from Garmin is that they have a larger screen than the eTrex line, which might be nice for cycling. Quote Link to comment
+coachstahly
RAM mounts have quite a few options for GPS units. Based on your preferences (size, buttons, touchscreen, price), they all will do what you want it to do. Quote Link to comment
+GrateBear
I have both a Dakota 20 and Oregon 450, both Garmin. They work just fine, give the beeps, and are pretty accurate. As it's been 10 years, I'd suggest waiting for Black Friday weekend before buying. I got both of mine for under $200 (3 years apart) each by buying that weekend. Quote Link to comment
