Garmin Colorado 400t

Recommended Posts

I was recently given a Garmin Colorado 400t that belonged to my son-in-law. There was no manual with it but I have found them online. My wife and I started Geocaching using Garmin eTrex Venture HC handhelds. It's easy to load caches into this units using Mapsource. I have found that Mapsource doesn't work with the Colorado. So I learned how to install my pocket queries into the Colorado. Yesterday we decided to go caching. So I loaded the newest pocket query into both units. After finding the first cache I realized that the next closest cache on the Colorado was different than the one on the eTrex. I scrolled through the list of caches but the one listed next closest on the eTrex was not in the list on the Colorado. When I got back home I uninstalled all the caches from the Colorado and reinstalled the newest pocket query again into the Colorado. It still isn't showing the same list of caches that appears on the Venture. Has anyone else had this trouble that can give me some idea as to why this might be happening?

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

How did you install your pocket queries into the Colorado? Did you just copy the GPX files or did you use another program?

Did you clear your Colorado first? If the amount of caches (and/or GPX files) reaches its limits, some caches might be lost. The same can happen if caches are double installed.

You might want to take a look at BaseCamp. BC is also suitable for the Venture and uses the same maps you have in MapSource.

Thank you for your reply!

I deleted the old gpx file and added the new one through Windows Explorer. I started to look at Basecamp which started an update and never finished. I will go back and have a look again.

I also own the Colorado 400t and that is all I use for geocaching (just can’t stand using the phone even though it can hold many more caches - just my preference). Is there any chance that your “missing caches” on the Colorado were found by your son-in-law? If he marked them as found, they will not (by default) be displayed on the Colorado.

First, make sure you are using the Geocaching mode (please refer to the manual for this or go to Set Up - Mode - Geocaching). When viewing the list of caches, use the button on the upper left corner and select “show found caches” or something to that effect (sorry, I don’t have the unit with me at the moment, going from memory). Look at what comes up. Do you see any of the “missing” caches?

One solution might be to do a complete reset of the unit. That should (I would image) remove all the “saved data”. Then again, I bought my unit used and I think the previous owner did a reset, yet I was able to see a number of tracks and caches listed in some of the files.

BTW, to load caches into the Colorado, I download the GPX files to my computer, connect the Garmin via USB cable, and extract them to F:/Garmin/GPX (on your system the F might be a different letter). When I want replace a GPX file, I first delete the old one from F:/Garmin/GPX

That’s how I use it, others likely have easier solutions. BTW there used to be a useful wiki for the Colorado but sadly it is no longer available (or at least I can no longer find it online).

Don't know if any of what I wrote it helpful to you, hopefully yes.

Thank for your reply! As I mentioned in my original post, when I got the GPS it didn't have a manual but I found one online. The way you mentioned as how you upload and delete caches to the GPS is the way I found how to do it using Windows Explorer. I am pretty sure my son-in-law didn't find these caches since they were published recently. But I still checked the found caches list and the only ones there are the ones I have found. When I was trying to figure out why the caches weren't being displayed I did a hard boot which cleared everything in hopes that would correct the problem but it didn't. I still couldn't see the caches so I used Internet Explorer to load those few caches individually onto the Colorado. The Google Chrome and FireFox browsers don't support the Garmin Communicator Plugin anymore so you can't use them to load caches on your GPS.
