Convert Coordinates

I found these coordinate on a website 0617546 E 5083790 N — 0614653 E 5090709 N & I want to be able to convert them to use on my Garmin Map 62S.. My Garmin is set to WGS84 Datum DDD MM.MMM.

Thanks for any help. The FrenchLeprechauns

Those look like two sets of UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) coordinates, although they're missing the grid zone designator. The grid zone designator is a number-letter combination that defines what part of the world you're in. The number part refers to the grid position in the east-west direction and the letter refers to the north-south grid position.

If you know the general area your coordinates are supposed to be in, you can do a search for UTM grid zone map to figure out the correct designator. Also, UTM coordinates are listed on the geocache pages just below the Lat/Long coordinates, so you may be able to use a nearby geocache to figure out the grid zone. As an example, my zone is "10T" and it covers most of western Washington, Oregon, and northern California (USA).

Once you figure out what grid zone your coordinates are in, you should be able to switch your Garmin's coordinate system to UTM and enter the coordinates directly, or you could use an online converter if you prefer.

One other note, after the zone, UTM coordinates give the easting (E) coordinate first and then the northing (N). Sometimes on the easting, the zero in front is dropped. This is the way it's shown on the geocache pages. So your coordinates "0617546 E, 5083790 N" would be shown as "E 617546, N 5083790" if they were posted on a geocache page.

Windstorm thanks for the reply. I tried what you suggested & it looks like the original coordinates are incorrect. Once converted they take me to some place not near where the place should be.

I think that 0617546 E 5083790 N — 0614653 E 5090709 N is supposed to represent the whole trail, and is to be interpreted as FROM 0617546 E 5083790 N TO 0614653 E 5090709 N

I would contact them, and see if they would be amenable to posting dd mm.mmm coordinates for trail heads and trail ends. I don't know that many people would be attempting to use UTM coordinates.

This is the website?

It could also be that the coordinates are in a different coordinate system and not in UTM. There are many more coordinate systems that are based on a projection to a plane than UTM.

Where do the coordinates come from and where should they point to approximately?

Supposing this is in Canada and UTM I would try

finding the right zone e.g. N7 ... N22 when knowing which part of the country by having a look at http://www.nrcan.gc.ca/earth-sciences/geography/topographic-information/maps/9779

I would first try North American Datum 1983 (NAD 1983) and choose this datum and the correct zone for conversion in this tool http://tagis.dep.wv.gov/convert/

If this isn't the right choice, I'd try another datum listed there.

Going on the assumption that it is indeed the Celtic Shore Coastal Trail, the zone is 20

Go to that page in Toporama, and click on "menu". In the dropdown menu, you can choose "get coordinates from map"

Click that tool and move it to wherever you want, and the various coordinate formats will be displayed.

For example, I clicked on Inverness, and got this info:

Are you trying to upload the coordinates just to hike a section of the trail, or is your need to convert the coordinates to do with finding or hiding caches?

If you are looking to find caches along the trail, start by looking at the "hurricane series" caches hidden by MaMaMoe.

Keystone thanks for the link to FizzyCalc. Also thanks for correcting the topic title. I tried to do that myself but couldn't figure out how to do it.

I love FizzyCalc too. But sometimes I am on another computer I can't download it. So I use Boulter.com Coordinate Converter.
