New Category Proposal: Mexican Benchmarks

When I was in Mexico over the weekend, I happen to stumble across a benchmark. I took photos of it anyways even though I knew that there isn't a category for it. Then the idea hit me. What if I created a category for it. We already have Canadian Benchmarks as well as U.S. Benchmarks. There are also other survey categories that are limited to just one country such as French Benchmarks, Dutch Benchmarks, and German Tripoints. Any ideas?

I'm wondering if any benchmarks recovered in Central and South America could be grouped together into a 'Latin American Benchmarks' category? This category would cover much more territory and prevent a possibility of multiple categories. I think the challenge here is to find a Spanish-speaking Waymarker knowledgeable in the surveying world in Latin America to provide input and guidance for this potential category. All other existing Benchmark categories in other countries have those knowledgeable people who understand the technology and can oversee the Waymark submissions.

thebeav69 is right. A category for Mexican or Latin American benchmarks would be viable under certain circumstances. I just do not see a group of officers with the required knowledge inside the current Waymarking community. A well worked out category would be fine, but I will not vote for "Things in Mexico that Look like Benchmarks to Foreigners".

That's a good idea. Does thebeav69 know any other waymarkers from the U.S. Benchmark category that would offer some help in creating a category for Latin America Benchmarks? Personally, I just thing survey disks are cool and that's why it's one of my top categories that I post in.

What if there is a NEW category, just like thebeav69 created with dated structures multifarious, that encompasses all benchmarks that cannot be included any other category. So benchmarks in Asia, Africa (excluding South Africa as I believe there is already a category for that), or some parts of Europe. It would be a place to categorize all benchmarks that don't already have a category. Say, there's a modern metallic benchmark you find in Europe such as in Luxembourg. It's not historic enough to place it under the European Historic Survey Stones and Monuments. I've found a few modern benchmarks in Spain and tried to submit them to their version of U.S. Benchmarks (Vértices Geodésicos). They were declined as to that they are looking for specific survey monuments, similar to the U.S. Benchmark's version of another category (Azimuth). Because they are modern, they don't fit in the Historic European Survey Stones and Monuments. Also, this new category could be a place to waymark survey nails and points in the U.S. as well since they are already not accepted in the current guidelines for U.S. Benchmarks, even though they are survey points. Do you think I could try doing this route or is that too big for now?

You did not understand; U.S. Benchmark officers cannot help much. You need Mexican survey specialists.

Not at all! This is not too big for now, this is too big for ever. Do you really want to approve gazillions of things from all over the world without any knowledge about it. This would going to be the mother of all messes.

YES EXACTLY! In our experience, there are enough benchmarks that are permanent (or intended to be permanent anyway) without adding in all the temporary ROW marks, property corners, etc etc etc ad infinitum. US benchmarks already accepts non-NGS non-PID marks monumented by other agencies, so I would not like to see that expanded to all survey points, everywhere, set by anybody. EEEEK!

 

And as for Mexican benchmarks as a category, I think it would not be viable because it would not get enough submissions. I suspect the same is also true of Latin American benchmarks, but to my mind that has a better shot at viability as a WM category.

 

That is a shame because Mexico is a beautiful country. The people are friendly, open, honorable, generous, and hospitable. I used to go frequently in the 1980s, but that was before the drug wars.

No, I do not. Is it mac compatible? Sometimes I upload to postimage.org when I am creating puzzle caches or earthcache. Let me see if that works.
