Mapping with Trails?

I'm not aware of any service like that besides the classic mapquest.

I like to use Expert GPS for that. I can get the waypoints overlaid over a choice of topographic or aerial maps, But the best part is that I can scan any trail map of an area and then use it in the same manner! Really useful if you like to see what trail is closer to the cache.

Try http://www.lostoutdoors.com/newmap.html

looking at the USGS Photo image of the area and compairing it with other maps you get a good idea of exactly where to look for a cache in relation to the objects at the site. its very helpfull if you need to know what side of a river something is on or how far off of the trail it is

I think software like Delorme Topo does, but is there anything online?

From what I can tell, Delorme's Topo shows Trails. See http://www.delorme.com/topousa/samples.asp?sample4=images/PikesPeak.jpg&x=35&y=48 and I think it's showing a known trail and not someones tracks, correct?

So what I'd be looking for is something online that can show this same type of info. So if I went and mapped out say 5 caches in a park, which trails would I take and how best to hit all 5, as an example, is what I'm looking for.

And if there's nothing online, is Delorme the best choice - $86 for all of the US? Is the National Geographic software better - $89 just for the North East?

I've never used DeLorme, but the consensus among those who've used both seems to be that NG Topo! is far better. I have NG Topo! and I really like it.

Most mapping software doesn't show most hiking trails. This is probably because hiking trails are very fluid and subject to frequent relocation. The software would probably be out of date before its released.

NG Topo does show some older, long existing trails, but doesn't provide the detailed maps of trail networks that I think you're looking for. I'm sure DeLorme is similar in that respect. I think what you are seeing on that link to Delorme is a track.

I don't know anything about Delorme but have NG Topo. NG has many of the trails in our area already stored on their website. For example, you can download all those in Harriman Park into NG program. Then add your 5 cache waypoints. Then upload the route nearest the cache and the cache waypoints into your GPS. Then follow the route to the caches. I actualy did that with a couple of Brian's cache in NJ and it was really neat.

As a companion support, get the NY and NJ Trail Conference hiking trail maps for the areas you plan on caching. They really help locate the best trails to take and the Conference has these maps for everything around.

Good luck

I didn't know this. Thanks for the info Alan.

If anyone's interested in seeing what trails NG has already routed for you, check their MapXchange Just pull down the area you're interested in. For the northeast, they have trails routed for the following areas. It's pretty extensive as you can see. OF course you need to purchase their Northeast program about $99 in order to load the routes. But then you get all the 24K quad maps for 10 states in the northeast and can print out these maps, add UTM grid lines, upload to you GPS, etc.

This makes me wonder if the localhikes.com website is an ofshoot of National Geographic. Many of the routes here seem to come from the localhikes.com website.

That and localhikes.com gives away free National Geographic Adventure paper and National Geographic Topo! software. I wondered how they were able to afford to do so. There has to be some tie-in with NG.

Looking at that photo, I really couldn't tell where the trail was either. I could see some woods roads, the swamps and that lake (which I've had my eye on as a cache site for months now).

Brian: I see that localhikes.com has published some of your trails. That's great! Have you tracked them with your GPS and provided the data to NG for publishing for NG Topo for routing coordinates?
