+RJ McKenzie
How many caches can the eTrex 30x hold? I can't find the answer anywhere. Quote Link to comment
+derektiffany
I keep mine under 2k total w/ max of 750 caches per gpx file. Edit: Sorry, the above response was for the Etrex 30, not 30x. Edited May 18, 2015 by derektiffany Quote Link to comment
+Red90
The 30x does not exist yet.... I don't thing Garmin has stated that yet. Most likely 2 million as that is the limit for other new units. Quote Link to comment

Why would anyone want that many? Even 2000 seems like more than anyone would want on there at any given time. Quote Link to comment
+derektiffany
Sorry ... I didn't notice the "x". My original response was aimed at the Etrex 30. For the 30x, the specs here say 2000: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/into-sports/handheld/etrex-30x/prod518048.html#specsTab Which makes it sounds similar to the capabilities of the 30, and without the ability to use ggz files. Actually 5,000 geocaches. From the Garmin support site - eTrex 20/30 2,000 GPX files 2,000 waypoints 5,000 geocaches 200 routes, 250 points per route 200 saved tracks 2,000 archive tracks 10,000 points per track 100 custom map tiles 250 BirdsEye Imagery files Approximately 3,000 mapping segments I would not expect the 30x to be less Edited May 18, 2015 by jholly Quote Link to comment

Way-points are not the same as geocaches. Garmin is very inconsistent in which data they publish for their various handheld products and it is often difficult to find what you want. One would think that they would cite the geocache capacity in the main specs listing for any unit they describe as a geocache capable unit. Quote Link to comment
+GeoLTL
2,000? Interesting. I read somewhere on the forum about a year ago (when I bought my 30) that it could hold 5,000. Don't know the thread, just that it was in this community. Based on that information, I routinely load either 4,000 or 5,000 on it, from 4 or 5 gpx files (usually 1,000 caches each). Do I know that all of those caches are loaded? No. But I haven't had a problem finding any of them. Quote Link to comment

+MaliBooBoo
The link shows info for the etrex 20/30, not the etrex 20x/30x. It would be surprising if the new etrex line didn't support the GGZ format (meaning basically unlimited geocaches) unless Garmin is deeming that to be some sort of higher end feature. Pup Patrol
http://garmin.blogs.com/my_weblog/2015/05/introducing-etrex-20x-and-30x-outdoor-handhelds.html#.VVt25vAQi1s Introducing the eTrex® 20x and 30x Outdoor Handhelds 13 May 2015 @ 6:00 AM / Outdoor Blog / Today we're excited to announce an upgrade to the popular eTrex handheld line, eTrex 20x and 30x. These next-generation GPS handhelds retain the ease-of-use, durability and affordability of the original eTrex line, but add an all-new 2.2” sunlight readable high-resolution display and 3.7 GB of internal memory, which is more than twice the amount available in their predecessors. Rugged and water-resistant 1, eTrex 20x and 30x boast a high-sensitivity GPS receiver with GLONASS support, a preloaded basemap and a variety of mounting options. Whether used on ATVs, bicycles, boats or as a handheld, eTrex 20x and 30x will keep users on the right path, or easily guide them back if they lose their way. “We’re extremely excited to add new eTrex units to our handheld lineup,” said Dan Bartel Garmin vice president of worldwide sales. “The eTrex units are the more accessible and easy-to-use units that Garmin offers, and we’re looking forward to bringing higher-end features like the vivid color display and expanded memory to this entry-level line of products.” Boasting a 2.2”, 65K color, sunlight-readable, high-res display, eTrex 20x and 30x are built to endure rugged environments. The ergonomic design fits easily in users’ hands, and with an IPX7 water rating 2, eTrex 20x and 30x can withstand the elements. With the built-in high-sensitivity WAAS-enabled GPS receivers with GLONASS support and HotFix satellite prediction, eTrex 20x and 30x can acquire a satellite fix quickly, and maintain it, even in heavy cover and deep canyons. These new units also maintain the intuitive user interface of the previous eTrex models, making them extremely easy-to-use. Preloaded with a worldwide basemap, and equipped with 3.7 GB of internal memory, users can upload even more mapping or data to their eTrex through the microSD card slot. Both units will also support a variety of maps, including TOPO 24K, HuntView, BlueChart® g2, even City Navigator® with turn-by-turn navigation. In addition, eTrex 20x and 30x will also be compatible with BirdsEye Satellite Imagery (subscription required), so users will be able to download images to the device and integrate them into their maps. The eTrex 30x adds a built-in 3-axis tilt-compensated electronic compass, which gives directional information even when standing still, without holding it level. Also added is a barometric altimeter to get more accurate altitude information, or to track barometric pressure over time to gauge changing weather conditions. Additionally, eTrex 30x can wirelessly share waypoints, tracks, routes and geocaches with other compatible devices, including VIRB action cams, and accessory sensors like the Tempe™ temperature sensor, foot pod and heart rate monitor. With a variety of profiles, eTrex 20x and 30x can be customized for each occasion or activity. Switching between configurations is a breeze, so when users get back to the car to drive home after a long day on the trail, they won’t miss a beat. Both eTrex 20x and 30x will also have a dedicated geocaching profile, which supports GPX files, so users can download cache information directly to the unit, without needing to manually enter coordinates or deal with paper printouts. With a variety of mounting options, eTrex 20x and 30x are designed to be used on anything from ATVs, bicycles, boats and cars, or simply in the palm of a user’s hand. Boasting extended battery life, eTrex 20x and 30x run on two AA batteries, and can get up to 25 hours of use. Available in summer 2015, eTrex 20x will have a suggested retail price of $199.99, and eTrex 30x will have a suggested retail price of $299.99. eTrex 20x and 30x are the latest solutions from Garmin’s expanding outdoor segment, which focuses on developing technologies and innovations to enhance users’ outdoor experiences. +MaliBooBoo
Yeah, nice to know it is paperless. And that it supports GPX files. Still, it is too bad that the info is silent on how many caches it will hold, which is what the OP is looking to find out. Quote Link to comment
+bambam897
Well I was looking on here out of interest. To earlier posts the reason why it is useful to have a large memory bank is if you go on holiday and you haven't got access to a computer and want to cover a wide area I tried 1000 geocaches but when checking the gps said - 'no geocaches' despite the fact that there was a 5mb file sitting in the GPX folder. I tried 800 geocaches and this worked. Guess I need to experiment with it. Quote Link to comment

I tried 800 geocaches and this worked. Guess I need to experiment with it. The 30 should hold much more than 1000 geocaches. Maybe give it a few more tries. You are unzipping the file, from your PQ download, before copying it to your Garmin/GPX folder, correct? I would assume so, since you were able to the get 800 to work. If the 1000 worked, but the 800 didn't, then it's possible one of the extra 200 is corrupting the entire the GPX file. I don't know the specifics of why this happens, but searching the forum for 'corrupt gpx' might turn up something. Maybe try loading an entirely different set of 1000 caches, and seeing if that will load correctly. Quote Link to comment

I routeinely put 3000+ on my '30 (not 30x) whenever I go out, I did experiment in the early days and experienced some problems when I put over ~ 4500 on mine so I never go that high. Another possibility is if there's a bad cache in the .gpx file the 30 will say it has no caches, so perhaps there's something in the 1000 cache download that doesn't get included in the 800 download that is corrupting the .gpx. 1 Quote Link to comment
+BlackRose67
It's a fairly common problem for the GPX indexing at initial boot (after loading a new GPX) to fail sometimes. With my first generation eTrex 20 (not 20x), once I put more than 1500 caches on the card, the chances of a GPX index failure seemed to increase. For that reason, I put the geocaches on an external microSD memory card. If there was an indexing issue, pull the card, restart/shut down, put the card back in, restart. Using an external microSD card also gives you the option of having multiple cards for different locations. Quote Link to comment
+noncentric
My 20 (not 20x) had some issues in the beginning, but I now follow a routine that seems to have remedied most of whatever those issue were. I don't update my GPSr very often, maybe twice a week, and my typical transfers total around 3500 caches. Steps that occasionally resulted in indexing issues: Connect eTrex to PC Delete old/unwanted .gpx files from Garmin\GPX folder Copy new .gpx files to Garmin\GPX folder Disconnect eTrex from PC Turn on eTrex Steps that rarely result in indexing issues (my current process): Connect eTrex to PC Delete old/unwanted .gpx files from Garmin\GPX folder Disconnect eTrex from PC Turn on eTrex Turn off eTrex Connect eTrex to PC Copy new .gpx files to Garmin\GPX folder Disconnect eTrex from PC Turn on eTrex Edited May 27, 2016 by noncentric Quote Link to comment
+valhalla73
hi, regarding the etrex 30x and number of geocaches. I have the 30x and It will only hold 5000 caches maximum, I use pocket queries and each one is 500 caches. If you wanted to have more then that (ie, different countries, etc..) you can put them on separate sd cards so they can be swapped out in the field. Quote Link to comment
