Archived Caches

The new search feature does not return details of an Archived cache...... which makes some research to confirm meeting a secific challenge cache very difficult. The only way we appear to be able to do this is to use Google and use the GC number of the Archived cache.

The previous search facility always returned details of any archived cache.

Is this an oversight or a "new feature" please?

You can enter the GC Code for an archived cache in the search box on the Geocaching.com homepage (if you're logged in). The cache details page will pop right up. :anicute:

Well that does not work actually..... all it does is return other caches but NOT the archived cache. Try searching for GC55H55 (which is called The Ballad of Molly Mogg) and see if it comes up in the found listing..... it does not for us.

I tried, it does not work, just got a list of other caches but not GC55H55.

EDIT: keystone is right, we just used the wrong search.

Please explain what you meant by saying that Keystone was right and that we were not using the correct search please?

What should we be doing..... and is it documented?

Thanks

Go to the home page, geocaching.com and on the right under the 1 is a search box, enter the GC code there and it'll take you to the archived cache.

We have entered the GC code into the main search box on the Geocaching Home page and made sure that no filters are set.... but still no Archived caches come up in the list just a load of others..... where is the 1 that you refer to please?

Surely it cannot be this hard can it?

Thanks

Make sure you are logged in to Geocaching.com.

Go here.

On the right you'll see "how to go geocaching" with three steps numbered 1,2 and 3 below.

Under 1 you'll see "search for nearby geocaches" and just below a search box that may have coordinates in it, enter the GC code in that search box.

Ah ha..... so intuative (NOT) is this new search feature. To find an Archived cache you DON'T use the new search panel at all..... you have to go back to the main Geocaching home page..... THEN use the search "feature" on the right hand side (which normally has your home coordinates in it). Remove the coordinates and enter the GC code you are looking for then press the search magnifying glass icon next to it.... Simples (Huh!)

Now of course that makes perfect sense.... don't use the new search feature .... use the old one. Doh!!

Thanks to all who responded.... hope Geocaching.com take a look at this weird way of searching for Archived caches.

Yah, but if you want to feel like you're using a new part of the website click the "play" (with its fancy new drop down menu) at the top on any GC page then click "log a geocache" you'll be taken to yet another search asking for a GC code, this search will also take you to the archived cache.

Oh Wow..... now why didn't we think of that? Just cannot figure out why the "main" search feature (that says Search the millions of geocaches worldwide.)does not return the archived cache when a specific GC code is entered ... surely it's using the same search engine/function?

Finding archived geocachers has always been discouraged. They haven't been shown on the map for years. The primary purpose of the advanced search is to find details of caches you can go and hunt. Archived caches are not in play. They were archived for a reason. You can find them if you know the hider or the gc number but the general attitude of Ground speak is that it shouldn't be easy.

The only reason we were looking is that quite a few "Challenge" caches require confirmation of a find (even if it's Archived).... not everybody keeps logs of everything they have ever done on Geocaching including a find date etc so a quick and simple search was all we wanted...... OK so we have found that now but it was not intuative nor was the attitude of Groundspeak towards Archived caches known to us.

So we will leve it there thanks.
