+cerberus1 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Cracked container, damp inside, with no maintenance done since June of last year, and now you're asking for someone to maintain it for you? On the cache page, ask for the next finder to pick up your geotrash and then archive it. Quote
+dartymoor Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 (edited) That's an unnecessarily brutal response from cerberus1. But... I kind of see what they mean. Not only that, but it's not an old cache, placeds in 2013, hasn't received many visitors nor has it earned any fave points. To be fairly blunt myself, I'm not sure why it's worth preserving. The nature of geocaches is they have a natural lifespan, for as long as their CO maintains them. That has been reached by you, clearly, and unless it's venerable or special in other ways, I think you'll struggle to find someone else to take it over. Also odd is your profile - never found a cache and only placed one. Bit strange! Anyway - on the face of it, well done for not just abandoning it. You may have reasons you can't maintain it (health or life getting in the way) but although rude, the above advice is not bad advice. Either collect it in yourself, or ask someone else to, so you're not littering - and archive it. Don't be too sentimental, you'll be clearing a space for somebody else to come along and place theirs. Pup Patrol Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 We have an established cache in Grays Town Park, Grays, Essex, called "A Thorny Problem". We are now looking for a volunteer to maintain it - are you interested? Rather than counting on someone else to maintain it, you should adopt it out to someone. That way, they will receive emails when it is logged, and they can deal with the maintenance issues. The new owner would be able to post the appropriate "owner maintenance" log after the repairs have been done. You could post a note on the cache page that you are looking for someone to be the adoptee/new owner. Your other option is to archive it and ask for someone local to pick up the remains. It needs to be one or the other, as archived caches are not adoptable. If you do archive it, someone can place a new cache there, with no fuss or bother. My Geocache Needs to be Archived http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=56 While we never permanently delete a geocache from our system, you can archive it. On your geocache's page, just click "Archive Listing," enter any comments, and submit the log entry. This will remove your geocache listing from search results. To archive a geocache is to remove the listing permanently. A geocache owner can archive their own listing. A geocache owner cannot unarchive it. Once your geocache has been archived, please be sure to remove the physical container from its hiding spot ASAP. Help Center → Hiding a Geocache → Geocache Ownership: A Long-Term Relationship 3.15. +Happy Humphrey Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I guess that the CO only created a profile so he/she could set up this cache (funded by the Lottery). Unfortunately it looks like the fund only stretched to buying a cheap container and log book, and no-one did their research far enough to realise that you have to maintain the cache after placing it. Probably the best course of action would be to archive it, but then persuade a genuine geocacher to set up a new one (and maintain it). Quote
