Forgotten Caches

Recommended Posts

Friends got me interested in challenge caches. One entailed finding caches that hadn't been found in one month, two months, etc.

Now I'm hooked. Yesterday, I found two in the mountains that hadn't been found in two years.

What's the longest forgotten caches others have found?

Those are my favourite kind!

Last year I found a couple that had been waiting seven and eight years respectively. Those were special. And surprisingly, both in good shape.

If it's an FTF, even better. But finding (identifying, reaching) a lonely cache that has never been found is quite a challenge. I seek them out. My record for that is four years, and it was tough.

Hey that just might be a great way to avoid lame caches - I love mountain caches and the hike that goes with it! I should give it a try! In general I don't look to see how long since the last find - but maybe I should! I assume most of them might be harder to get to!

I found Somewhere in the ONF after 4 years+ unfound, no attempts GCZ07P Nothing really special about this, not really remote. I drove a street car within about a mile, and hiked in on decent ATV track.

It's being found pretty steadily now.

In Florida, of caches that may well be present, I think this guy is longest unfound, at over 6 years,

One of the famous long unfound, 4.5lb Walleye http://coord.info/GCDFB placed in June 2001, and FTF by first person to actually make it to the coords, in June 2013

Who's going to be the first to bring it up? Technically, you know, I didn't

Are you talking about the unfound cache claimed to be found by someone who put down a Throwdown cause the cache may have been missing?

Almost all caches here in Qatar are lonely caches as the caching community is so small. Heck, we even have a lonely FTF  We're not going after it because it's ours

Lonelycache.com explore it for there is a lot of info there.

Wow. Anyone looking for unfound caches needs to make a trip to Utah, apparently.

EDIT:

Oh wait...nevermind.

"the complete LonelyCache area of coverage consists of eight of the United States: Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming."

Yeah, you beat me to it. :)

Be nice if a similar group was formed elsewhere.

The majority in my area are puzzles/challenges. There are a few multis and traditionals that are either unfound or "lonely", but they are almost exclusively owned by one particular CO east of Atlanta.

I have no idea what my "longest forgotten cache" is. It might be one of the puzzle caches, but around here, even the puzzle caches get a fair bit of traffic.

But I know someone who got a STF on a 4-day solo backpacking trip, more than 5 years after the FTF (GC127KW). I think the T5 rating has something to do with it.

No, talking about a couple reviewers that appear (to some of us) to be going on lonely cache cleansing missions.

Present tense?

A few years back a reviewer sent chills down my spine from many provinces away, putting garish multi-colored check-it-or-lose-it logs on all sorts of lonely caches, even - memorably - on a cave virtual. The virtual owner's response was priceless. (I tried finding the GC#, tried hard, but couldn't.)

At the time I was seriously concerned Groundspeak had a new, uncommunicated policy. But now I think that reviewer had just gone "rogue".

But then, in my own province, suddenly three never-found caches, remote ones I'd been preparing a visit to, suddenly went poof without a trace. Retracted. Why?

This does worry me...

I maintain some Lonely Cache (forgotten) lists for parts of FL and there are a couple Resurrection challenges in FL for finding such caches.

They are an interesting mix of remote caches, hard puzzles, long multis, evil nanos, and probable missing caches. Some get replaced by throwdowns, but thankfully this seems rare.

The loneliest ones I found was a few years forgotten in a natural area that was seasonally wet and had been closed for a little while for some restoration work.

We decided to go to MINNESOTA from Oostburg Wisconsin to do some geocaching. It was heard that MINNESOTA had great caches and well kept up. Well after driving 5 1/2 hours and taking in about 20 caches, we were extremely concerned that rhe info was wrong. All but one had little or no swag, soaking wet boxes, rusted out tin boxes, no signing sheets and not found near coordinates and many not found. We tried our hardest to dry or fix the ones we could but many need fixing yet. Anyone that plant boxes should not lose site of them or if you don't want to keep them up, ask for help. After trudging through the woods infested with ticks and mud, we would like to keep the game going. In the Midwest, we need to review these sites every couple of months.

I just found one here in Philadelphia hidden in a park, last find was about a year ago with a DNF or two between, then nothing. I had been watching it for a while and just decided to go and see for myself as it was close by. D/T was 1.5/1.5.

I know it was nothing like the ones mentioned earlier, but I think it fits.

My son has 3 lonely cache challenges - the total of unfound days for caches whose previous find was more than 183 days before your find - 5 years, 15 years and 50 years. He qualified for 50 years unfound in May 2014 with a cache previously found in October 2009. About 1690 unfound days if I remember correctly.

I'm at 13.7 years with my longest unfound being 703 days.
