Finding (emailing) local cachers

Howdy, all!

A step or two closer to the Fox Hunt and I realize that I don't know how to contact cachers within a set of zip codes. Is that explained somewhere, or do I just email the admins and ask that they send a message to all cachers within certain zip codes?

Anyone else done this?

It's not an official event yet, so I don't want to post it that way. I just want to alert everyone within shouting distance that I'm looking for volunteers. I could just contact every cacher listed in the logs of local caches but I'd hate to miss anyone just because they don't log their visits on-line.

Suggestions?

I think posting here is a great start. Although not everyone visits the forums, those who do may know some who don't and pass the word on.

I'm a fair distance from State College, but I'd love to stay informed about this upcoming event. It's certainly possible that I'd be able to attend this event, and I'm definitely interested, as it promises to be a neat variation on the sport.

Other suggestions:

1. Look at the names of people who have been to prior event caches in your area.

2. Look at the 10 caches closest to the site of your event, and e-mail all the recently active finders who have found those caches.

3. Go to Dan Miller's stats site and e-mail all the people who show up as active cachers in Pennsylvania (I think we only have city lists for Philly and Pittsburgh). Use either the recent logs feature or the leaderboard feature.

4. Don't forget to invite people who may live a fair distance away, but are totally nuts about geocaching. (hint, hint)

If there's no accounting for stupidity, then why do I need to file a tax return?

I'm supposing an event announcement would cover this.

I thought of this and will do so, but I want to be sure I'm not excluding anyone who'd like to help out but isn't a webby sort of person. I'm sure there are cachers around who seek and find but don't bother to say so here.

Well, I'm not sure this event would be quite what they're looking for-- oh! I cut off the quote! Sorry. icon_wink.gif

Until very recently, Dan Miller's Stats Site was my favorite way to keep track of who was logging geocaches in the area. Each day, I would use the "log list" feature to see what new cache stories had appeared on the site. A much better way of keeping track of the big picture than using watchlists. It was also fun to watch our own team name creep up in the standings for Pennsylvania, which is where the above link will take you.

Unfortunately, on January 6th, geocaching.com cut off access to their site by the stats site. I can only hope that some solution will be worked out. In the meantime, you can still use the site for information about cache finds, up through last week.
