is it my imagination, or are the advertisers in the gc.com sidebar less and less reputable companies? didn't they use to at least make sure they were selling advertising to people who didn't put up anonymous downloads you might accidentally click while trying to write your logs?

i guess anybody's money is good enough.

careful about dragging that pinkie.

I think that is more related to your browsing history than anything else, but I could be mistaken.

Those are Google ads and are at least partially based on your browsing habits.

Lots of people don't realise that Google search results AND Google ads are personalised on an individual basis.

Any website that you visit which provides real estate for Google ads will show you ads based on YOUR browsing history - or at least the browsing history of the device you happen to be browsing from at the time. In short, the ads tend to be a reflection of the things you've been looking at online recently :)

It would be nice if Groundspeak would disable ads for premium members. I wouldn't mind seeing ads from your own store though.

I'd be willing to pay more to lose the ads.

Why would you pay more when you can get Adblock for FREE and remove all annoying ads on other sites as well as Groundspeak?

Of all the things that might be worth paying Groundspeak more for, this is the very last that would be worth extra.

We aren't supposed to run adblocker on the work computers.... I'm still not sure why not.

I usually don't pay any attention to the ads but now that this thread mentioned it,, i am now seeing a barely bikini clad friend finder type ad. It has come up twice now in the last few minutes.

Before anyone mentions it, i am the only person using the computer. And no, i don't do social sites and i certainly haven't been looking at anything remotely related to porn.

I agree, premium members shouldn't have to put up with these ads.

Yeah, standard Google ads, and they pretty much follow my browsing habits. I see a lot for the email relay provider for a website I run, and lots of other sites I have visited. Of course I see them pretty much all over the interwebs, and they actually don't bother me. Maybe I'm funny that way. Wasn't there a time when us premium members did not have to see any ads? Not that I care or anything.

How do they feel about using work computers to access geocaching.com?

As long as I'm not on the clock and it isn't blocked for content it doesn't seem to matter.

They just seem to have a distorted sense of safe (workstations that wipe all cookies and such on logging out).

If they worried about it they could deny access through the corporate firewall.

Well the side-bar ad for Groundspeak with the rather scruffy (presumably) lackey was a bit hard to take.

But the one I got the other day from the NRA was strange. I realize a lot of people support it. But a lot of people are opposed to it. The concern is that it is a controversial organization. And for $25 membership, it offered my an item that is considered a weapon in New Jersey, and is almost impossible to buy here. There would be considerable paperwork, which is why few stores sell that anymore in New Jersey. Yes, they offered it to me!

Ads here should avoid controversial organizations and subjects.

Who'd decide if it was controversial?

I get ads from the brady campaign and peta. I simply disregard 'em.

I can tell you I got a JC Penney Maidenform bra and a panty ad the other day. I'm talking like a close up shot of panties on a model. But Mrs.Yuck has indeed bought stuff from JC Penney online. This is merely Google adsense, and I get that same ad elsewhere on the internet.

I haven't seen it on the GS sidebar but over in a well known social media site I frequently get adds from dating sites with pictures of single women just looking for a faithful guy. The part I don't get is that these dating sites that are supposed to help you meet the person of your dreams but have been showing the same pictures for 2-3 years and doesn't seem to provide a good endorsement on the success of their services.

Maybe she's looking specifically for YOU

Google Contributor is an experiment by Google to directly contribute to sites and not get advertisements. Only a few sites are supported so far.

And it still irks me that ads are being delivered to premium members on geocaching.com. C'mon, Groundspeak. Do the right thing.

Sounds like someone needs to figure out how to use incognito mode when they're not on geocaching.com.

Why doesn't anyone ever complain directly to Google, the purveyor of said ads?

B.

I figure it's just part of getting all their freebies, well, for free.

I use google for everything from searches to spelling, never "contributing" a dime.

- With my luck, I'd end up on a "@%*!^*" list and all info after my complaint would be incorrect.

"Google, why are you displaying ads on geocaching.com?"

Because Groundspeak chose to do so in order to get ad revenue.

Pretty much. I personally don't mind seeing Maidenform bra and panty ads. I just can't figure out why I see Google adsense ads all over the internet for the email relay provider I use, and even the ISP I use, both for a website I run. Hello, I visit your websites because I already use you. You're wasting your money; or Google is screwing you by showing your ads to long time customers. :)

I've already complained before both about premium members having to put up with ads and the sleazy content of them. Why should we have to put up with advertisements when we are paying them for a service? As a family orientated past time all the adverts for non-premium members should be G rated too. Get rid of them for your paying members. They really annoy me.

I've not seen sleazy adverts on the site myself.

Generally they relate to something I had looked at... e.g. lately I've seen lots of hiking boots advertised.

One time after my wife used my machine for some shopping I was seeing lots of ads for women's underwear.

For a while I kept getting ads about visiting my mother in India... which I found odd as I don't have any connections to India, and didn't research anything about India that I can recall.

I have to agree. I find ads for camera equipment and photography classes, because I've been buying lenses and watching photo how-to videos on youtube.

If the OP is seeing R- or X-rated ads, he/she needs to find out who has been using the computer to search for nefarious sites.

Yep, agreed. The ads I'm seeing are now showing a lot of information about Maryland because I'm going there next month -- not for GeoWoodstock though. :(

I don't mind ads because I figure they're subsidizing the site and keeping the cost of my premium membership low. And, hey, if I'm going to see ads anyway, they may as well be targeted towards me.

I'm certainly not seeing any sleazy ads.

AdBlock keeps the ads away. I never see any ads on this site.

+1. Use AdBlock, folks. It's free, it takes mere seconds to activate and it works tremendously well. And to those people suggesting members pay more to hide ads, I would rather suggest using AdBlock and making a small donation to them instead.

AdBlock Plus is FREE. No ads for me.

Yep. Same here. Got AdBlock, got no ads.

I keep hearing that and it's great on my desktop. But what about mobile devices? I still haven't seen a viable solution without rooting your device and voiding the warranty or proxy inc all traffic through a third party which you may or may not be able to trust.

If you're using Firefox use Adblock, NoScript and Ghostery. Look at their settings and you're not only adfree but trackers won't be able to set their cookies or track you.

And by the way, don't use Google to search the web, use Startpage (https), it doesn't track or logs your IP and search history either.

It works with firefox on android. You will have to find the APK file on adblock's websitethough as Google removed it from their playstore. No need to root your device.
