I think that is more related to your browsing history than anything else, but I could be mistaken. Those are Google ads and are at least partially based on your browsing habits. Lots of people don't realise that Google search results AND Google ads are personalised on an individual basis. Any website that you visit which provides real estate for Google ads will show you ads based on YOUR browsing history - or at least the browsing history of the device you happen to be browsing from at the time. In short, the ads tend to be a reflection of the things you've been looking at online recently Quote Link to comment

+Mudfrog
I usually don't pay any attention to the ads but now that this thread mentioned it,, i am now seeing a barely bikini clad friend finder type ad. It has come up twice now in the last few minutes. Before anyone mentions it, i am the only person using the computer. And no, i don't do social sites and i certainly haven't been looking at anything remotely related to porn. I agree, premium members shouldn't have to put up with these ads. Quote Link to comment
Mr.Yuck
Yeah, standard Google ads, and they pretty much follow my browsing habits. I see a lot for the email relay provider for a website I run, and lots of other sites I have visited. Of course I see them pretty much all over the interwebs, and they actually don't bother me. Maybe I'm funny that way. Wasn't there a time when us premium members did not have to see any ads? Not that I care or anything. Quote Link to comment
+terratin
Certainly true, about personalized ads: I just booked a flight to Bangkok and a couple of hotels. The ads I'm seeing urge me to book a flight to Bangkok with the same airline and to book the hotels I just booked Quote Link to comment

+Harry Dolphin
Well the side-bar ad for Groundspeak with the rather scruffy (presumably) lackey was a bit hard to take. But the one I got the other day from the NRA was strange. I realize a lot of people support it. But a lot of people are opposed to it. The concern is that it is a controversial organization. And for $25 membership, it offered my an item that is considered a weapon in New Jersey, and is almost impossible to buy here. There would be considerable paperwork, which is why few stores sell that anymore in New Jersey. Yes, they offered it to me! Ads here should avoid controversial organizations and subjects. I haven't seen it on the GS sidebar but over in a well known social media site I frequently get adds from dating sites with pictures of single women just looking for a faithful guy. The part I don't get is that these dating sites that are supposed to help you meet the person of your dreams but have been showing the same pictures for 2-3 years and doesn't seem to provide a good endorsement on the success of their services. I just can't figure out why I see Google adsense ads all over the internet for the email relay provider I use, and even the ISP I use, both for a website I run. Hello, I visit your websites because I already use you. You're wasting your money; or Google is screwing you by showing your ads to long time customers. Quote Link to comment
+justmeg
I've already complained before both about premium members having to put up with ads and the sleazy content of them. Why should we have to put up with advertisements when we are paying them for a service? As a family orientated past time all the adverts for non-premium members should be G rated too. Get rid of them for your paying members. They really annoy me. Quote Link to comment
+redsox_mark
I've not seen sleazy adverts on the site myself. Generally they relate to something I had looked at... e.g. lately I've seen lots of hiking boots advertised. One time after my wife used my machine for some shopping I was seeing lots of ads for women's underwear. For a while I kept getting ads about visiting my mother in India... which I found odd as I don't have any connections to India, and didn't research anything about India that I can recall. I have to agree. I find ads for camera equipment and photography classes, because I've been buying lenses and watching photo how-to videos on youtube. If the OP is seeing R- or X-rated ads, he/she needs to find out who has been using the computer to search for nefarious sites. Austin Quote Link to comment
+DanOCan
Yep, agreed. The ads I'm seeing are now showing a lot of information about Maryland because I'm going there next month -- not for GeoWoodstock though. I don't mind ads because I figure they're subsidizing the site and keeping the cost of my premium membership low. And, hey, if I'm going to see ads anyway, they may as well be targeted towards me. I'm certainly not seeing any sleazy ads. Quote Link to comment

Look at their settings and you're not only adfree but trackers won't be able to set their cookies or track you. And by the way, don't use Google to search the web, use Startpage (https), it doesn't track or logs your IP and search history either. Quote Link to comment
