[FEATURE] Show DNFs in profile

Recommended Posts

Locals know I have a tough time finding anything smaller than a 30 cal.

I'd think it fun as heck !

- But my other 2/3rds, the stat nut, competitor and finder of uninspiring roadside micros, would probably be mortified.

We know of many just in our little neck of the woods that won't log anything other than a Found It.

I like the idea myself, but don't believe it'd be popular.

I was poking around and found that this feature already exists, but not for everyone:

Can we be allowed to opt-in to this nifty stat display?

It exists? How??? I love it!

It's part of an April Fool's joke where Groundspeak created profiles for fictional cachers Dean F. and Eftie F.

Interestingly, while a joke, it has touched a chord with some cachers who would like to see the DNF log be used more widely and hopefully reduce some logging practices by cachers who seem to be willing to do anything to avoid having to log DNF.

I didn't want to out the profile that has this feature. Now I have to, lest it be perceived as a "joke"

DNFs are no laughing matter. Unless, you know, spray manure is involved.

Here's what I got from Moun10bike's profile page source:

<div class="mxStats" style="position:relative; top:-418px; left:268px;">
<div id="ctl00_ContentBody_ProfilePanel1_Panel_CachesFound" class="statbox"><strong>DNF Pride!</strong> <img src="/images/icons/32/dnf.png" alt="" /> <span class="statcount">755</span></div>
</div>

I copied that into our profile editor (go here) as the very first line. Then change "755" to whatever your DNF count is. Here's a shortcut to your DNF logs where you can see the how many you've submitted. Or you can find them on your http://www.geocaching.com/my page. Under "Your Logs", click "Geocaches", and on the page that comes up, click "Didn't find it".

I had to modify the "top:-418px" part to -359 to line it up, which took a few tries. I think most of the difference is because our profile picture is smaller than Moun10bike's.

Thanks for pointing this out, frinklabs! And thanks to Moun10bike for showing how it could be done.

I realize this topic is rather tongue-in-cheek...

While I like the idea, I can see something like this being posted automatically on a person's profile discouraging them from logging DNFs. It's hard enough to get folks to log them without that.

You misinterpret my intent. There is no tongue in any cheek.

I believe that legitimizing and posting the DNF statistic would go a long way towards alleviating the unwarranted stigmatization of those logs.

Users could be encouraged to post them, along with the associated sometimes-amusing stories.

DNFs can be as much or even more fun as finds, if that's the way you like to play this game.

I totally agree. I wish my DNF pride was hyperlinked to show all my DNF logs. Some of them are great!

This!

I use the number of caches I really didn't find; what the map would show if it did show blue smileys. Whenever possible we come back to a cache we could not find previously and try again. I think our record is 3 DNF on a very simple cache until we finally found it, and 3 DNF on one we never did find :P Btw, we expected to get one DNF at the Maldives as it's a photolog thingy , but lo and behold: we did not only find the cache but also a throw down :o Almost a shame: that was a DNF we really were prepared to take

I agree! I only have 571 DNFs. But I don't want everyone to know that. I am certainly not proud of my DNFs. Most are a failure on my part, and are of no use to the CO.

That's why it could be an opt-in option for users. Perhaps a premium feature?

My finds are of no use to the CO either....

I would love this feature. I would also like the number of my DNFs and hides to show under my name on my logs on cache pages.

Unfortunately I can't get the manually updated one discussed here to work on my profile - just messes up the whole page for me. Most likely because of the rather archaic style of HTML I used for the rest of my profile. One day I'll get around to updating it...

They don't seem to work well for me either. The "DNF Pride" boxes appear, but they appear on top of other content (like the "See the Forum Posts for This User" link), and not next to the "Caches Found" and "Trackables Logged" boxes as shown in the screenshots in this thread.

Now the question is, should the number reflect the number of DNF logs that you have written? Or the number of caches that you have logged a DNF, but not a found it?

Does nobody care about this question? For me this would even justify two DNF counters: Those "issued at all" and those "not having a found later on" (I'm not kidding!).

For consistency, it should be the number of DNF logs, just like the find counts is the number of logs not caches. This is more accurate too as it's the number of times a find was attempted but not successful.

However, personally, I think the number of finds should be caches found not logs. It would also be more logical as it would be the number of times a find was attempted and was successful (you can't find something twice).

Says who? I have several duplicate finds. And I am proud of them! A traveling cache that had moved 35 miles between my finds. Found it! Twice. Locationless caches. One months it was: Find a lion statue. Next month it was: Find a spot where the coords read the same backward and forward. Found it! Twice. Or the Photography Cache. This month take a photo of the world's largest cat. Take a photo of Falling Waters. Loved that one! Found it! Twice. Or Four times?

Most of those no longer exist. But I can still (if I work hard at it) find a travelling Cache twice!

So, nope. You are wrong.

However, personally, I think...

I could make silly blanket statements like "you are wrong" but I just play the game how I like, and I don't log finds twice on the same cache. :)

Happy caching!

So simple answer. Don't log caches you find twice and your count will be as you desire it. I'm not sure why you want other people to play the game how you like.

I don't want to steer off-topic, but there are numerous reasons why one would "legitimately" log multiple finds on a single GC code.

Back to topic, I like the idea of better integrating DNFs. As an example, it always bugs me that my Days Caching number is only incremented if I log a Find. If I go caching and I DNF every cache I try that day, I still was most certainly Geocaching and my Days Caching count should reflect that.

If you copied and pasted without changing anything, then the DNF stat box will probably be in the wrong place. In the copied source given by JJnTJ above, 418 is the number right behind "top:". You might try changing that to a higher number to see where it puts the box.

I just added the DNF box to my profile page and yes you do need to play with the 418 number until you get it right. For me it was 388.

And I used the number of DNF logs posted, mostly because that was the easiest available number.

No, that isn't it at all. I mean that profiles that display as expected in some browsing environments, display otherwise in other browsing environments. For example:

If DNFs become too much of a source of pride, then fake DNFs may become common! :o

How can a CO know whether a DNF is fake and therefore delete it???!

I'm ready to post a DNF for the 5/5 geothermal vents cache. I started to walk to it from a beach into the ocean, but was forced to turn around when the water got too deep! :( (Or should I be smiling because of "DNF pride"?!)

This is interesting. I've had a look at the source code for each of the profiles where the user had included the DNF Pride! HTML. In general, they seem to be adding it at or near line 513. I'm no coder, but I would think it would make more sense to insert it on a new line just below line 433. Or am I missing something here?

What you are missing is that the line numbers you are mentioning are from the displayed webpage.

That is a result of combining the Groundspeak webpage (which we cannot alter) with the custom HTML that is inserted in the Profile Details edit box.

It is in this editable box that the additional code is inserted which adds the DNF Pride thing.

Have a look at post #18 for the details on this procedure.

I've added "DNF Logs written" and "Caches Hidden" to my profile. I could paste the HTML here if someone explained the Tags I need to do that.

It has to be the very first thing in your profile and it needs to be adjusted to account for your profile picture. The taller your picture the lower the boxes will appear so you need to increase/decrease the negative offset to compensate.

Use the code tags. They show as the <> symbol in the edit bar

I tried to put a link inside a set of code tags embedded in a set of code tags, but it doesn't parse well; I think you get the idea:
