+doingitoldschool Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Looking for anyone using iCaching to talk too. I have just recently gone over to the Mac side, and am thinking of trying iCaching. I have searched for "icaching" and only found older or side references to it. Thanks. Quote
Keystone Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 I am moving this thread from the Geocaching Topics forum to the GPS forum. Quote
+geodarts Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Icaching has a demo version. Try it out and see what you think. Quote

Did you use GSAK previously, and if so, how do you like iCaching? Quote
+northernpenguin Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 HI there. Did you use GSAK previously, and if so, how do you like iCaching? GSAK to iCaching here. Well trying to. Things I like about iCaching: - Native Mac OS App. No more Parallels. - Can load up database with Geocaching Live and PQs - See everything on a map Things I don't like about iCaching: - Much more difficult to load my GPS with caches as GPX and child waypoints as POI. Still possible, but I'm stuck with doing two filters and two loads instead of one button GSAK Macro to do this. This is more a thing that bugs me because I got used to loading it a certain way with GSAK. Someone starting today unlikely to care. - Pocket Queries page does not have a "Download All" or "Download All New" option. If I just go down the list when set to "Download through File" and mash "Download, Download, Download" it downloads then ignores the downloaded files. So I have to hit "Download" wait. wait. wait. Pick next file, hit "Download" wait. wait. wait. With GSAK I hit "Download all" get a coffee, then come back and load the GPS. Alternatively I can switch it to use "Download through API" setting in which case a 1000 cache PQ takes about 12 minutes to process. Multiply that times 10 PQs for the day and it becomes more time effective to fire up Parallels and load using GSAK. - Crashes on GPX file imports. A lot. - No option to filter per ARC/GPX file for loading along a route - Database engine seems slower Quote
+_SWH Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 I came across your post from searching for caching. I have the full version. I like it mostly. The filters for smart filter I have not figured out yet exactly. I like the ability to just download and go. If you know how to use the filters, let me know. Quote
+Mineral2 Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 I downloaded the iCaching demo and I'm unconvinced that it's going to improve my workflow over managing pocket queries from the website. For one, you can't activate a pocket query from the program, only download files/caches from the server that are currently available. Yes, I realize that API searches are essentially the same thing, but the search page in icaching isn't quite as detailed as a PQ. I'm not happy that the map isn't connected to the geocaching Live! api. That is, the map view only shows you caches in your database, but won't pull from the server. I also wish that you could highlight caches on the map (drawing a box) to send to the GPS. I'm not giving up yet, but so far I'm not impressed. I suppose it may be useful if you want to: 1. mass log multiple finds (say a power trail), or 2. you're traveling a broad area and won't have reliable access to the internet, in which case you can download a large database of caches to your computer to load regions while offline. +Pi&A Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 I like it a lot. Easy way to manage caches in areas. Easy way to update pocket queries (that i configure via the website) Easy to update all the caches in the ICaching DB But: cannot compare to any other software as i haven't tried any other Quote
+shskr Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 I've switched to icaching for my Mac, since my windows machine packed it in. Was getting used to Gsak and liked the features Gsak had. Now I have to learn icaching. So far it does pretty much the same thing as Gsak. I did like the template for logging multiple caches at the same time in Gsak. Quote
+shskr Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Updated to the newest version 4.97. Now it will not export to file or GPS. Keep the older version (4.96). Unfortunately I deleted it out of my trash bin. Will have to wait for the new version to see if they fix it. Quote
+Mineral2 Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 go back into a time machine backup and grab the older app file. Quote
+page28 Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 I have been using Icaching since aug 2012 find it quite good . I think a recent API limit changed made things fall apart but thats fixed now, works well with my gpsmap62S and the smart folders to filter caches work well Quote
+MtnMutt-ProDuckShins Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 Very interesting about iCaching, I'm using it 4.97.5 and no issues as yet. I use a 62ST along with a Nuvi 500 and they seem to play fair with each other. Quote
+page28 Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 I just need to add one thing not quite related to ICaching but for those of us that use macs in general. After doing the export from iCaching on the devices that show up in disk mode I always use CleanEject (http://www.javawa.nl/cleaneject_en.html) When I was using my 60CSX it started to lock up due to files dropped on there by OsX.... I just do it as a matter of routine now. Quote
robertlipe Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Page28, some people observe that upgrading to the last firmware fo tthe 60Cx stopped the "beep until you die" bug. Is that not your experience? Quote
+KRUZZIN 2 Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 I have been away from geocaching for a couple of years and now I'm coming back. I used to use GSAK to load PQs from a PC. I am now on iMac and while I have Parallels using it is a nuisance. I've tried EasyGPS and it seems pretty simple to use if not as feature rich as GSAK. Anybody else using EasyGPS? If using iCache avoids Parallels and is as easy to use I would give it a try. TIA Paul Quote
+Mineral2 Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 I'm going to resurrect this old thread for a bit. I've started using iCaching again and have found it to be much improved from its 2014 and 2015 iterations. There are still some issues to be worked out - the program seems to have a hard time with large databases, at least on my cranky old machine. There are still no map tools to select caches by area (currently can only filter by state or distance from home, no lat/lon boundaries or distance from other points. No caching along routes). But despite these shortcomings, GGZ export has been added, and that feature is what made me switch. With GGZ, I'm no longer concerned with how many caches are loaded on the device, so if I have to put an entire state on the GPS when I'm just visiting a small region, so be it. This does mean that as I travel, my database gets larger and larger, but hopefully a newer computer will solve some of my problems. Quote
