And watch the ripples! This is purely a throw away comment to see where it leads. " Twelve new caches are published, great one says, then realise they are called Kayak 1 to 12". Is this just a way to by pass cows in fields or is Geocaching getting a bit to diverse. If you do not have a Kayak, waterproof GPS/Smart phone, canoeing skills its sort of a no go series really. I know that nobody has a gun to your head to do all these caches, but give the elderly landlubber a chance of some smileys on his map!

Sounds great to me, variety is the spice of life.

 

Would you also could make the same complaint against any cache more than a few hundred yards off the road, anything requiring climbing a tree, up a cliff face, in an inhospitable environment (desert/tundra etc).

 

Like you said you don't have to do them all, and I don't think you should expect that every cache placed has to be within your, or any other individual's, ability.

Of course I agree that "Everyone has their limitations" and would simply not expect every cache placed out to be obtainable to all who Geocache, also agree that Variety is the Spice of Life. If its tree climbing you look up and decide should I, should I not, one has a choice, but Kayak !! Perhaps one could skinny dip at all the relevant locations

I would say you got that argument the wrong way round. If there's a kayak cache then you could buy/hire/borrow a kayak to do it, on the other hand if it's 50 feet up a tree it may well be outside of your capabilities and therefore you have no choice in the matter.

 

I've seen quite quite a few boating/kayaking caches where trips are frequently organised, those with boats take them along, those without go along and thumb a lift. So get organising, I would expect if they're newish caches then there will be a few boaters interested and a summer visit may be on the cards.

 

Can you give me a GC number as I might be interested myself!

I have much more chance of getting a cache in a kayak than one 50ft up a tree, not that I have or have access to a kayak

I prefer the water caches and 50' (3+ terrain) up in trees to the same, boring (for me) park n grab, cache n dashes.

If your area's anything like mine, there's plenty of those easy ones to go after, which far outnumber 12 kayak hides, really...

FWIW I was in the same boat (pun intended ) as the OP last year, I didn't have a Kayak, though my Etrex30 is waterproof. There are a few boating caches near me so I decided to give it a go and bought an inflatable 2 person Kayak on Fleabay for ~£60 delivered, add to that a waterproof case for my Nexus 7 tablet for ~£5 and I was ready to go. I've only done two caches with it so far, one on my own on a canal, the other was an organised trip where I took the Kayak and then ferried everyone else out to an Island, but I've also taken it out on a lake a few times for it's own sake. I'm definitely planning to use it some more when the opportunities present themselves.

Hmmmm! Is making use of a boat mandatory an ALR and therefore not allowable.........

Caches which require specialist equipment to access them are nothing new - it's a factor taken into account in the guidelines for rating terrain/difficulty.

 

A someone who doesn't own a kayak (or the nautical confidence to want to borrow one), I would see such a cache as being pretty much unobtainable for me. However, it's still more generally attainable than some others I have seen....one cache springs to mind which is in a disused nuclear facility and requires full anti-radiation gear....and there are caches by Lord British at the bottom of a deep ocean trench and also on the ISS, both of which definitely require some specialist transportation/equipment)

An orgaised trip down the River Avon sounds a good jolly, will have to wait and see if anything like that is suggested during the Summer. I do know that it is a lovely part of the river. Starts very close to the royal household of Camilla at Reybridge with its Chocolate Box Cottages and goes past the abbey at Lacock. They have no right to delete the logs if she found them and signed the log, I would have relogged the find(s) and then complained to GS if they persistently deleted them.

Well what a coincidence, a couple who are waiting for their inflatable Kayak to be delivered mentioned these caches to me at a London event last night. I still think they sound good, and the requirement for a car at each end would definitely suggest a collaboration with a boat owner is in order - it's a bit far West for me though.

 

On the other tack, it's a pretty cache rich area, so 12 that are out of reach still leaves plenty of land locked caches....

FTF in June 2010 and only one find since. Kayak caches can be pretty challenging, which I think it rather the point. Stepping out of your comfort zone is a healthy thing, surely? Not every cache is for everyone, but there's a lot of grey area for most people - especially those willing to... take the plunge?

Don't give up too easily! I'm 60 next month and the enemy is a bit older than me - we did our first ever kayaking today and loved it Bit stiff now though.

50' up a tree though, no chance, 3' up a ladder is more than enough for me...

I did that series Link to #1 and had a great time.

 

Now I was lucky; I had a friend with a kayak. Though even if I didn't, I would have eventually found a way to borrow or rent one. Or a canoe would do fine too. Or even an inflatable crocodile. While I don't own a boat I have paddled canoes and kayaks before and this was a series I wanted to do.

 

There are also scuba diving caches. While that does interest me slightly, it is not something I've ever done, and I know would take some time and money to get myself able to do them. So those don't get done, at least for now.

 

I think variety is good, and I don't mind at all when I see caches for which I don't have the correct equipment. That includes "chirp" caches (though I know have a device for that), NFC caches, etc. I did some NFC caches with a friend who had a compatible device as I don't have one myself.

Certainly liked your logs and photos. Cleaning it took awhile then, and that new word Portage! You must have had time to ask about Abanazers Puzzle whilst you were adrift as well no doubt! Sounds like it was great fun.

Spot on Paul. After 21 months of caching I'm on 1500 caches, 53 D/T combos I think - but a T5 virgin. Putting that to rights on Monday when Geo-Myck and I are aiming for 7 new D/T combos, Reading / Theale / Aldermaston way plus... a kayaking 5/5 by Sutton Courtenay, Myck's inflatable kayak at the ready! I can't wait, have not been in a kayak for 25 years or so. I would go caving for caches given the chance (but will give some local storm drain caches a miss...)

 

As with so many threads on this forum, my thoughts are - cache how you want to [in a non-destructive way!], when you want to.
