+niraD
Really? Are there that many mega-events that are so big that we need a new giga-event type? Link to comment
+Ravenhawk80
Not many but some events are big enough and the normal mega status is nothing "special" anymore... Giga-Events are the natural extension of Mega-Events. These are the rarest of all event types. After attendance of over 5000 geocachers is documented at a particular Mega-Event, Giga status may be awarded by Geocaching HQ. And just like Mega-Events, Geocaching HQ reserves the right to deny or retract publication of Giga-Events sponsored by other commercial geocache listing services, as well as parent and affiliated companies, unless written permission has been granted in advance by Geocaching HQ. Will it have its own cache type/icon? Yes! Here it is: [image] Will it count in my stats? Absolutely! How many attendees are required for Giga status? 5000 or more Why is Giga 5000? Yes, we know that the metric system prefix giga stands for 1,000,000,000. We co-opted the term to stay in line with our current system of event and Mega-event. The name Five-thousand-event didn’t have the same ring to it. Why add the Giga-Event type? A handful of events have grown much faster and larger than most other events. We wanted to show appreciation to the event organizers and attendees and distinguish these unique experiences with a new event-type. When/where will the first Giga-Event be? GC4K089, Project MUNICH2014 – Mia san Mega! on August 15–17, 2014 in Munich, Germany. How do I get Giga status for my event? Your Mega-Event has to set a precedent of having enough attendees before being eligible for Giga status. We’ll review all Mega-Events to see if they qualify for Giga status. more in german language: http://www.stash-lab.de/2014/04/21/giga-kommt/ http://www.gocacher.de/?p=6327 Link to comment

+DanOCan
Sure glad that hit the top of the priority list since we know a new type of mega event was something we were clamouring for. Link to comment
+NYPaddleCacher
Sure glad that hit the top of the priority list since we know a new type of mega event was something we were clamouring for. Sigh. It's yet another feature that benefits those that happen to live in a geocache/geocacher rich area but will be essentially unobtainable for those that don't. Raise of hands. How many of you plan on flying to Munich to attend this event and get the special icon? Edited April 21, 2014 by NYPaddleCacher Link to comment
+Ambrosia
I'm perfectly fine with the new cache type, but <sigh> it will the first time that I don't have all of them. I knew it would happen someday. First world problems. Link to comment

+geocat_
From what I understand about German cachers they should have no problem logging 5000+ attendees no matter how many actually show up. Doubt me???? Someone has already "attended" this event (although I am sure it is legit and they signed the log through clever use of a time machine) Link to comment

+psubrian
So I *might* be in the minority, but somehow I highly doubt it. I'm going to dislike this strictly from the standpoint of how Groundspeak keeps telling us about the "issues" of creating new icons/cache types and all of the coding issues. There have been a fairly significant amount of folks who'd like to see field puzzles and challenges (the good kind - not the failed experiment) get separated out from "puzzles" as there's enough of them that it warrants it. This 'giga' cache type, while very cool, has very little effect on the geocaching community worldwide as there are VERY few events that have the potential for 5000 attendees. And we don't even bring up the *problem* thousands of cachers have where the find counts don't match the stats because of lab caches. ::sigh:: Link to comment

+Roman!
I like the idea but it seems like a rare icon and as others have said, there are other icons that have been requested, wish we could see those. Link to comment

You could pick up a Bayern souvenir at the same time. I'm surprise you haven't booked your flight. I could get that next month, depending on what flight I take when I go to Rome (no souvenir for Italy) for business. There's a decent fare on Air Berlin that would give me the opportunity to do some caching in Berlin and/or Dusseldorf. I'm not really an icon chaser though. I'll be in Seattle in June but have no plans to visit HQ. I'd rather see GS create souvenirs for more countries (like Italy, Belgium, Mexico, China,....) than this new event type. Link to comment

After all, we live in one of the most cacher rich areas in the world. I put my first cache out about 4 and a half months ago and already it's had 5 visitors. At this rate I should have my 5000th visitor sometime in the year 2379. Link to comment

+Ben0w
Raise of hands. How many of you plan on flying to Munich to attend this event and get the special icon? Me. However, I won't fly, having just a 45 minute car trip from my home to the event location. And I bet there will be easily more than 5000 real existing people attend the event. At the moment there are over 2500 "will attend" notes for the main event on saturday, most of them with more than one cacher behind. The surrounding events - a meet&greet on friday and a brunch in (the real) Hofbräuhaus on sunday - are almost overbooked already (you have to register through a website and pay a fee, if you want more than just to log). BTW: Not that 5000 people are a big issue for the city of Munich. That's only about half of the people getting served in just one tent on (the real) Oktoberfest at the same time. [] We'll see. I expect some fun. Only bad thing is, I now won't get my MEGA-souvenir that I'm looking for so long. Link to comment
+J Grouchy
With my aversion to crowds, I can't even begin to fathom how such an event would be remotely entertaining or enjoyable. Anything larger than maybe a dozen people and you can count me out. Link to comment

I notice that your visitors are the usual suspects of cachers who like to get new caches in the boonies. I'll need to try and visit it too! I'm perfectly fine with the new cache type, but <sigh> it will the first time that I don't have all of them. I knew it would happen someday. First world problems. I will come to Europe someday, though! Link to comment
