The Lazy Sunbathers
Anyone have any tips or experience making a cache out of a coconut? Quote Link to comment
T.D.M.22
Well once you open a coconut it is no longer waterproof. Animals may try to eat it-a coconut is food after all. Come to think of it since you shouldn't put food in a cache, you really, really shouldn't make a cache out of food. Quote Link to comment
The Lazy Sunbathers
Ha. That's clever. I hollowed out the fruit from inside already but wasn't entirely sure where to go from there. Quote Link to comment
Gitchee-Gummee
I think that you really must consider just how water resistant a container would be. If you can make it so, have at it. Oh yeah, if you think a baggie does it.... think again. Seriously! Quote Link to comment
The Lazy Sunbathers
I would defiantly put a waterproof container in it. Let me describe what I think my best idea is so far. Fill the cavity with spray foam and immediately put a waterproof pill bottle in it. Let it dry and harden, trim back any excess foam. I would use my soldering iron to etch the geocache label and GC code on the outside of it. It's one of the large green coconuts from the Florida Keys. Quote Link to comment
Gitchee-Gummee
Try this on for size... Use the coconut make create a mold... THEN shoot the expanding foam into the mold... open a divot for placement of a cache. Coat and paint the exterior of the new artificial "coconut" to resemble its copied cousin. Shouldn't then be any problem with bugs or animals. They wouldn't like the structure, at all. --or-- Blow up (pre-size) a toy balloon. Fill it with that expanding foam and tie it off (quickly). When set solid, tear away the balloon and carve the material to the desired size and "fine-tune" the shape. Coat and paint it appropriately. Just a couple of methods to create an artificial coconut. An artificial may or may not be better than a real one. Quote Link to comment
L0ne.R
Here's a photo of a coconut cache. If I did this, I'd tuck in a little round 3" authentic lock n lock instead of a bison tube, and attach it to the inside with some string. One end tied to one tab and the other to a screw attached to the inside of the coconut. I'd also make a little round coconut logbook to go with it. Quote Link to comment
SirDonB
I like the idea, and as long as its aged enough that animals will leave it alone, I say go for it. If the pic provided is the actual coconut, then it looks like it should be fine for your purpose. In addition to the etching, leave a note in the container informing people that may happen upon it, see the etching, pick it up and just be curious about it. The note will give them a little more info and direction to find out more info about geocaching. Quote Link to comment
StripyJules
My OH is working on one at the moment; it will be an outer container for a waterproof/secure inner. Looking okay so far; the right hand nut has a hinge at the back for the mouth to open. Still a work in progress. Quote Link to comment
The Lazy Sunbathers
The coconut I have is a fresh fall so it won't be dried out for some time. Back to the drawing board. Quote Link to comment

It'll seal the "food" smell & also help prevent decomposition in one year. Quote Link to comment
J Grouchy
You should get some of that decorative fake fruit, like say...a lime, perhaps...hollow it out, put in a waterproof bison...and then you could put the lime in the coconut.
